Clara Barney Steingrandt
30 March 1906 - 13 December 1952

In the 40's when my Mom was living in San Francisco, a local
friend came for a visit...Clara Barney.  While there she gave
Mom a painting that she had done.  While looking for information
on Clara, this is what a local historian told me...
"She was a beautiful Native American and was not respected as a 
painter locally. She painted some years in the Bay Area and then 
moved home to the old Effman homesite on Elk Creek and lived in 
a two story log house (which is still standing).
After she died, Dr. C. A. Hall, a realtor, bought the property. 
When he was cleaning it out and doing some remodeling, he found 
some huge paintings, all oil and painted on canvas rolled up in 
the attic. He showed them to Milton Kevershan Sr., who owned the 
Rexall Drug Store in Happy Camp. Kevershan had business rental 
offices in the building housing a beauty shop and optometrist 
office. In those offices, Kevershan had some of those paintings 
displayed. The ones I remember was of waterfalls with nude Indian 
women bathing, etc."
