Historic CCC Bridge

Sim's Camp Siskiyou County

It is a beautiful scene in the fall to visit the site of an old Civilian Conservaton Camp bridge built by the CCCs during the 1930s over the Sacramento River south of Dunsmuir, CA. along Interstate 5; the autumn leaves frame the old suspension bridge that spans the Sacramento River, open for walking, but autos cross the river now via a new two-lane concrete structure.

At the site of the original camp, the Forest Service has built a small campground with 19 sites, some located along the river and others along Hazel Creek which flows into the Sacramento River a short ways downstream.

Surrounding the campground is a trail with information markers along the way telling of the history not only of the CCC Camp, but a sawmill that was located after the camp closed.

One of the markers also tells of the unusual moss covered stone steps leading to an elevated flat that was the site of the Administration building and home of the commanding officer during the CCC era as the Depression was ending and just before World War II when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor. These young men were among the first men to enter service to defend their country.
