Sevey's Corners Cemetery--Town of Colton--CT030

Sevey's Corners Cemetery is located on State Highway 56, 2/10 of a mile before it intersects with State Highway 3. It is approximately 18.5 miles from South Colton. It is a small family cemetery with forty to fifty burials, and is located adjacent to the highway, on a small knoll. It is shown on the Childwold 7.5 minute topographical map, and the measured coordinates are 44 17 38 North and 074 43 11 West.

The first apparent burial was Lucy Finch Sevey in 1879, and the most recent burials have been David Cady in 2000 and Avis Carbary Bill in 2001. (Jan. 2002)

Additional information regarding this cemetery came from Eleanor Sevey Goodrich, whose great-grandfather was William Sevey (buried in an unmarked grave next to to his wife, Lucy Finch). William was a brother to Johnson Sevey. Also, there is a small stone marked "S.W.S." and it is possible that this is Silas Sevey. It seems that the only map for this cemetery was lost in a fire.

Also, rumor has it that there were some "unmarked graves on a side hill behind the old school house". (This school house is now owned by International Paper, and is located on the opposite side of the road, and just a short distance before you get to the cemetery). This area is fairly heavily wooded now, and there don't seem to be any apparent graves that I was able to spot in two quick searches in that area, but that is not at all surprising since they would not be easily visible at this date. (Nov. 2000).
