Town of Norfolk

The High Street cemetery, located on East High Street, is one of the oldest cemeteries in Norfolk. No information is available as to when it was started or how the land was acquired. It is shown on maps of 1854.

At one time there was a churchyard located beside the Episcopal Church behind the present bank building at 53 West Main Street, but in 1860 the bodies were moved to the High Street Cemetery to make way for construction in the area. Many lots are unmarked and no complete maps have been located.

Directions: High Street intersects State Highway 56 in the vicinity of where the railroad tracks also intersect. Turn onto High Street, and proceed (west) to just before the next intersection, and the cemetery is located very close to the street on the right.

Stone photos and as many obituaries as could be found are included.

(All the information, including stone photographs, for the High Street Cemetery has been generously provided by Leon Burnap, Town of Norfolk historian, and a group of loyal volunteers. My thanks to these people for allowing me to use the information. Chuck Morgan, 9/13/2010)
