Union Cemetery--Town of Potsdam--PO080

The Union Cemetery is located on State Highway 56 approximately half-way between the villages of Potsdam and Norwood (just slightly over two miles from either village). There is a lane leading to the cemetery almost directly across State Highway 56 from the Adams Road, and the lane is 3/10ths of a mile north of the Sissonville/Unionville Road. The cemetery is not visible from the road.

The cemetery is shown on the Potsdam 7.5 minute topographical map, and the coordinates for the cemetery are 44 43 07 North and 074 59 27 West.

The cemetery has probably slightly more than 150 burials, the first being in 1811 (Mary Laiton, three year old daughter of Simeon(?) & Harriet), and the last burial in 1915 (Lucretia R. Whiting Morgan).

Two notable stones in the cemetery are those of Dr. Marshall H. Himes, an assistant surgeon in the Civil War (96th Regt NY Inf), and Stephen Chandler, a Revolutionary War soldier with the Massachusetts Troops.

Susan Lyman (Town of Potsdam & Village of Norwood historian), and her daughter, Carol, did a stone census at this cemetery in 1964, and part of the data included in my database, includes their data, when the information wasn't completely legible on the stone.

Due to the isolation and the location of this cemetery, it has suffered a great deal of vandalism through the years. When I visited the cemetery in early June 2000, the most recent vandalism had occurred--some of the newly placed flags for Memorial Day were broken, and quite a few of the stones had either been broken off or toppled from their bases, or just pushed over. Photos of the vandalism are included.
