Me, Cindy, and Stanley aboard the Blarney Stone in Gowanus Canal

The last photo on this page shows me in my "khakis" - my High School uniform...the care-free days over. My first time away from home, except for summer camp, was a week aboard the New York Trap Rock Corporation scow - Blarney Stone - Stanley's uncle's command. It was pure adventure, traveling from the Rockaways through New York Harbor, and up the Hudson to Tarytown in company of dozens of other sand scows...in those days, each with a captain, and sometimes with his family, or invited guests - like me, on board. It was a very social thing.
Cindy was Captain Sverre's faithful companion, a mix-breed with a wonderful nature. This last photo shows Cindy a couple of years after I made the epic voyage, still alive, and well...Sverre loved that dog...everyone did.
