******
250 Years of The Sloyer-Schloyer-Schleyer-Scheier Family by Linda M. Klosek states that they resided in Springtown, Bucks Co. in 1905. He was an undertaker. After following his vocation in Easton, Pa and Raubsville he settled in Springtown in 1897. His property , on the main St. of Springtown, was situated on a 3 acre tract. He conducted business in the Seifert Funeral Parlor located in one house and in the morgue located in the rear section of the adjoining house. The business was operated by he and his son John B. Seifert. They also owned and operated a vault shop on the corner of Church St. and Lower Saucon Rd. in Springtown. The vault shop business was conducted in a building formerly housing the St. Paul's Methodist Church. They manufactured the Springtown Burial Vault. The business later became the Felix Hammerstone Burial Vault Co. In the 1980's the building was demolished and a private residence now occupies the site.
“Tracing the Seifert Family History” by Betty Gross Riter, Springfield Township Historical Society, Bucks County, PA; 11/15/2009:
Thomas Henry Seifert was born June 23, 1859 near Springtown. He was a son of John R. Seifert, born 1825. (John R. Seifert was a son of Leonard Seifert. Leonard Seifert was a son of John Seifert II.) Thomas H. Seifert was married to Ida Agnes Hess. Ida Agnes Hess, born 10-6-1865 near Springtown, was a daughter of Owen B. and Catherine nee Sloyer Hess, and a sister of Delia nee Hess Seifert, who was married to Adam Seifert, son of George W. and Sarah Seifert. Ida Agnes Hess spent seven years of her life with the family of Joseph T. Hess, at Leithsville, PA, where she grew to young womanhood.

Thomas H. Seiffert was a carpenter and an undertaker. He learned the undertaking trade with his brother Isaac Seifert, at Hellertown, PA. After following his undertaker vocation in Easton, PA, and Raubsville, PA for twelve years, he settled in Springtown in 1897. His property was located on a three-acre tract of land that included two houses fronting on Main Street.

The funeral parlor was located in one house, and the Seifert morgue was located in the rear section of the house next to it. The business was operated by Thomas H. Seifert, and his son, John B. Seifert, local undertakers. Thomas and John Seifert also owned and operated a vault shop on the corner of Church Street and Lower Saucon Road in Springtown. The vault shop was conducted in a building that had previously housed St. Paul’s Mennonite Church. The Seiferts manufactured the Springtown Burial Vault, and advertised "The Vault of Service Since 1907." Later, the business became the Felix Hammerstone Burial Vault Company of Hammerstone and (Bob) Lucey. While the building was in use as a vault company, concrete burial vaults were piled about on the grounds in front of the building. In the 1980's, the building was demolished and a private home now occupies the site of the vault company.
Thomas Seifert was also a carpenter.

June 6, 1886. The Springtown Weekly Times advertised, "Thomas H. Seifert, handmade furniture shop, undertaker”.

154. Edward SLOYER 1, 2 (Samuel SCHLOYER , Johannes SCHLOYER , Johann Michael SCHLEIER , Johann Michael ) was born 3 on 28 Jan 1844 in Bucks Co., Pennsylvania. He died 4, 5 on 29 Oct 1919 in Sandusky, Ohio. He was buried 6 in Bradner Cemetery: Bradner, Ohio. Edward was employed as in carpenter, violin and cello maker. He was employed 7 as in carpenter. He was baptized 8 on 2 Jun 1844 in Old Williams Ev. Lutheran Church Cemetery, NC, PA.

baptismal sponsors were: John & Elizabeth SLOYER
*****************************
Edward grew up in Springfield Twp, Bucks County, Pa with his family as outlined in the 1850 census information. The family attended the Old Williams Lutheran Congregation, now known as the St. Luke's LutheranChurch, Williams Twp., Northampton Co., Pa. Edward trained to be a carpenter like his father.Nine months past his 18th birthday he enlisted in the Army. Enlistment information describes him as 5' 8" tall with darkcomplexion, brown hair and eyes and having been a laborer (Pension file#147625) He volunteered on Sept. 22, 1862 in Easton Pa. for 9 months service. He was a private in Captain Stout's Company 1 Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteers. Captain Stout's Company traveled to Fort Curtinin Harrisburg, Pa. They were mustered in October 7, 1862 as Company F153rd Pennsylvania Volunteers. The 153rd Pennsylvania Volunteers were assigned to the First Brigade, First Division, Eleventh Corps. They transferred to Washington, DC on October 12, 1862 where they remained until December 1862. The unit joined the Army of the Potomac in time for Burnsides Mud March in January 1863. General Sigel's Eleventh Corps was on the Army's right during the Battle of Chancellorville. on May 2nd 1863 the XI Corps was routed by Stonewall Jackson's 2nd Corps of General Lee'sArmy of Northern Virginia. In June of 1863 both armies moved North. The153rd Pennsylvania Volunteers and the XI Corps arrived at Gettysburg midmorning. Edward's version of those events form his Pension File are asfollows:
"On or about July 1st 1863 I was with my company about 18 miles from Gettysburg, Penna: about 6 o'clock in the afternoon we took up a forced march to Gettysburg arriving at Gettysburg about 10 o'clock in theforenoon and immediately engaged the enemy beyond the town after we afterwe had engaged them about half an hour when we were ordered to fallback. While crossing a Clover Stubble field I was shot in the thigh (right), and soon fell to the ground helpless, unable to rise to my feet, the blood spurting from my wound in a torrent. My regiment passed on and left of me, and the rebel line of battle passed over and while lying on the ground in rear of the rebels I received a shot in the right side. Just below and a little back of the right nipple and following the rib that it struck past out at the breast bone...That I lay in the Cloverfield aforesaid until the evening of the next day -- being wounded between eleven and twelve forenoon and from exposure to the excessive heat of the sun for that time, and being without shelter of any kind Icontracted inflammation of both eyes which resulted in great weakness of my eyes and partial loss of the sight of both my eyes... All the afternoon of the day I was shot I was wholly unconscious, until the nighttime, in the Clover fields where I fell...(Pension file #147625, Claim paper for Increased Invalid Pension dated July 8, 1885) "
According to the pension file Edward was treated at the Poor HouseBuilding on the battlefield for several days prior to being moved to a temporary Hospital on the battlefield where he remained until August 1,1863. at that time he was sent to a hospital in Harrisburg for five months of treatment. Private Sloyer was mustered out July 24, 1863 at Camp Curtin, Harrisburg, Pa.
After recuperating at home, he attempted to work as a carpenter. This was strenuous work requiring him to travel to each job site and remain on his feet. As each year passed it became more difficult becauseof his war injuries. He applied for a pension in 1875 and again in 1876 .His pension of $4 per month was approved in 1877. Over the years this was increased and made retroactive to 1863.
In about 1880 Edward, his wife, and parents, Samuel and Catherine, moved to Rollerville, Sandusky Co. Ohio joining his brother Levine who had moved earlier . Samuel and Edward and their families subsequently moved to Brader, Wood Co. Ohio. from 1880 thru the 1890 Edward continued to apply for increasing pension since his injuries became increasing more deblitating. They forced him toi give up carpentry and opened a small shop in his home making stringed instuments. He also may have had to remain home since his wife developed "consumption" or tuberculosis from which she died in 1900. Edward continued to apply for pension increases. He died in 1919 at The State Soldiers Home, Sandusky, Erie Co., OH from apoplexy (a cerebral hemorrage).
Two unfinished instruments, violins, were saved for his oldest granddaughters at his death in 1919. and his great granddaughter, JoyceGodfrey, has been abe to purchase on of his finished violins.Joyce tells the story :"Years ago I found the 153rd roster on theNorthampton Co. site and left my e-mail attached to Edward's name. In June of 1999 I was contacted by a violinist from San Francisco. She had found the 153rd roster also - she wanted to know if this man could have been making violins in Ohio about 1900. I replied yes, she sent me pictures, and asked for more information on Edward's life. I had written Edward's story for a Civil War history course I took, I updated the story, and sent it off to her. She offered to sell me the violin! I had very mixed feelings - as much as I wanted this wonderful family treasure,it had been made to be played, and was still being played 100 yearslater, so we reached a compromise. When she bought (always old) new violins she would offer Edward's to me first. In February (2000) she made the offer to sell and I took her up on it. I am now the very proud caretaker of this instrument. My hope is that someday I will have a grandchild who will want to learn to play the violin, of course not on that one, but I will pass it along at some time".

COMRADE DENIED HALF-FARE RATE; NEWS AT HOME

According to Comrade Edward Sloyer's story, as he related on his return from Toledo, not all railway station agents fully understand the rules governing the half-fare rates allowed to members of soldiers homes. Sloyer secured a furlough here Jan. 30, and with it the identification cards which entitled him to go to Toledo, thence to Bradner, O., and from Bradner to Sandusky.

He returned here a day or two since, and now states that he got to Toledo and Bradner on the half-fare rate, but that when he presented his identification card to the station agent at Bradner for a hal-fare ticket to Sandusky the agent refused to honor it.

As the matter is now the subject of some correspondance criticism is withheld until all the facts are known. Bradner is a station on the Hocking Valley road, which line is among those enumerated in the instructions to the various railways of the United States regarding half-fare rates.

CHARLES SCHLOYER

Blacksmith - Trapper - Violin Mechanic - Friend

Seems as if I had known Charles Schloyer all my life, I can't even remember the first time that I might have ventured into his blacksmith shop. I only know that I was welcomed and he seemed happy to have me around, perhaps he was just a lonely old man, I say "old man" as that is how I picture him in my mind.

To try to give you a picture of Charlie and his shop, I have to give you a bit of insight as to his background as I remember things he told me and from getting additional information from one of his great grand nieces, I have been in touch with Mary Catherine Finger Twitchell, whose mother was the daughter of Charlie's sister, Mrs. Mary Catherine (Fred) Rollins. The Rollins lived just up the street from Charlie's one room home there in Trail City, (refer to the last newsletter and Dr. Al Water's map of TC). He also had a nephew in TC, whose name was Willard Bierly, who was married to Barbara Patsh, I think from Leola. The Bierly's had several children, I remember June and Leslie, June lives in Denver and Leslie in Rapid City. By the way, Willard, better known as Bill was a very talented violin player. Willard was a half brother to Ms Twitchell's mother Marcella Rollins Finger. So Charlie did have relatives there in TC. Charlie also had a brother Archie and sister Nancy Strong, I believe in Sandusky, Ohio area. He also had a wife, Mary, he did confide that to me, but he never mentioned her again in all the years I knew him.

It appears that a group of people, friends and relatives of Charlie's came out to TC around about 1920, they were Burt Paine and son Roy, Maggie Harvey, her son Clarence Harvey and another son Fred Rollins and his wife Mary Rollins, daughter Marcella and son Willard (Bill) Bierly. Burt was the postmaster in TC at one time and a carpenter, Clarence, had the shoe shop and harness repair business, Fred Rollins worked on the railroad section crew.

So that brings me back to Charlie Schloyer, he was first of all a super great blacksmith, there was nothing he could not do with his forge and anvil. But he was also a first rate trapper and an avid violinist and repairman, I know of many times when he would fix broken violins for the people in the west river area, he would take them completely apart and repair any broken area and glue it back together, sand it down and varnish it so it looked like new and sounded even better than it had before. He also owned a neat mandolin, wish I had it, and he could play it well too.

I would help him in his shop whenever he needed another pair of hands, especially when he had to fit iron tires on wagon wheels, or make spokes for those old wooden wheels, also when he would need me to help him replace the lugs on tractor wheels, in those days there were no such thing as rubber tired tractors, they had steel wheels and the drive wheels, (rear wheels) had large lugs to give them traction, many times the farmer would hit a rock and the lug would break, we would then make new lugs and either rivet or bolt them back on. Charlie never got rich as he would only charge a small amount for his work and generally would pay me a nickle, dime or quarter for helping him, depensing, of couse on how hard I worked and the value of my help.

Charlie was also very good at making bits and spurs for thevarious cowboys in the area, I would help in doing that too and then we would sweat on decorations made of German silver and copper, the cowboy's initials or first name, like Bill for Bill MacMakin, Benny for Bennie Bender, Cliff for Cliff Lewis also made belt buckles, I often wonder if any of those items are still around.

But perhaps what I like to remember best is his talent for trapping. He taught me so much about the many animals that we trapped there in the Snake Creek area. We became somewhat partners and I got to have the skunks we caught and he got the coyotes and badger. He taught me how to make the best set for traps, by that I mean, where the best site would be for catching coyotes, generally in an area that had little snow, dry ground and no trace of humans or dogs, as most people knew, coyotes were and I suppose still are very smart animals. He knew how to set traps, Victor #4's, in such a way that the coyote would be caught by 2 and sometimes 3 feet, if they were caught by only one foot, they would generally chew their foot off and escape, we caught many 3 legged coyotes over the tears. He taught me to make stretchers on which to dry the pelts and when to ship them to the fur buyers, we had two, I.J. Fox in St. Louis and Sears in St. Paul. Each week we would get a price list as to what they were paying for various grades of fur, we would get about $7.50 - $15 for coyote, $10 - $15 for badger, by the way, badger fur was used to make shaving brushes and that was before safety razors were even thought of, we would get $1.50 - 4.00 for skunk, then he would give me the monet received for the skunk hides. Generally we made a pretty nice piece of change for those times.

We would also dig out coyote dens in the summer to get the bounty that the county paid and once we dug out a den and it had 6 or 7 pups and one did not have its eyes open yet, so he said he would keep and raise it and it grew up to be quite the pet, the pups name was Skipper and it would howl every time that Charlie would play his violin, he made a little dog house for Skipper and had him on a long chain, and after about a year or so it became lonely to mate and got mean so one day Charlie had to do away with him, I remember what a sad day that was for both Charlie and me.

Clair (Bartender) Martin reminded me of the many times Charlie would sent us up to the pool hall to fetch him a syrup bucket of beer, he did like his beer and from what Ray Johnson said he recalled was that booze finally got the best of him. That is too bad because Charles Schloyer was a good man and that is how I will remember him.

A special thanks to Mary Catherine Twitchell, Dr. Waters and Bartender.

Respectfully submitted by:

Bill Baczuk
