Carol DiOdoardo lived her life the way she taught her art class at Sacred Heart School in Bath: creating wonderment and beauty, family and acquaintances said Tuesday.
DiOdoardo, 38, lived most of her life in the tiny borough and was friends with everyone.
Having grown up in a family of 11, she fell in love with a man who also came from a large family -- nine children -- and had a double wedding with his brother, with whom they had double-dated.
She did crafts with the children of relatives, and five years ago took a job teaching art at the school, which her two daughters attend.
And so it was a shock to virtually everyone who knew her that she was shot to death about 9 p.m. Monday in the parking lot at Macy's store at Lehigh Valley Mall in Whitehall Township.
DiOdoardo, of 6060 W. Main St., East Allen Township, was pronounced dead at the scene. Shoppers and mall workers reported they heard a woman scream, then two shots.
"I just can't believe it," brother-in-law Piero DiOdoardo, 39, said in a ragged voice as he sat in his Bath kitchen Tuesday, his 5- year-old daughter, Adriana, cuddled in his lap.
DiOdoardo shook his head in disbelief as he talked of learning of his sister-in-law's death through a message one of his sisters left on his answering machine when he got home from his night job at United Parcel Service.
He said his wife had found out shortly before he did and was very upset.
"She knew Carol very well," DiOdoardo said. "It's tough to lose a friend."
DiOdoardo said he last saw Carol on Friday, when he picked up his children at Sacred Heart, where Carol DiOdoardo taught part time and where her daughters Gabriella, 7, and Gianna, 11, were pupils.
Police hadn't given him information about the crime, but he said Carol simply had no enemies.
It was a sentiment echoed Tuesday throughout the Bath area.
At the school, seven counselors Tuesday helped break the news to the pupils and will be back today to help them deal with their grief.
Allentown Catholic Diocese spokesman Matt Kerr said letters also were sent home with children and the school was planning a special prayer service for Carol. He said the entire school will attend Carol's funeral if it falls on a school day.
Sacred Heart Principal Louise Glass said Carol was well loved and respected by teachers and pupils alike.
"Carol was a beautiful person inside and out, and a role model as a mother," Glass said.
Piero DiOdoardo said Carol had just accepted a full-time teaching job at a public school and was leaving her part-time position at Sacred Heart. Monday was her last day at the school.
Carol's husband, Fausto, Piero's 43-year-old brother, owns Barber Street Apparel in Northampton.
The husband and daughters gathered with relatives at their East Allen home and were too distraught to be interviewed, Piero DiOdoardo said.
DiOdoardo said the shock of the news was still sinking in for him and his wife, Angela, who had shared a double wedding with Carol and Fausto.
DiOdoardo said he and his brother, who were the closest in their family of nine siblings, had known Carol, who also had a close-knit family, for at least 25 years.
He said it seemed natural that Fausto and Carol were drawn together.
"She came from a real big family like us," DiOdoardo said. "For us, a family gathering is 40 or 50 people."
DiOdoardo said the four became fast friends as teens and were always together, double-dating while attending Northampton High School.
In 1986, the two couples were married in a large double wedding at Sacred Heart Church in Bath. Each couple served as the other's honor attendants.
DiOdoardo spread out family photo albums that depicted a happy, radiant Carol at the wedding, standing close to her good friend and now sister-in-law, as well as the two couples holding each other's children at family christenings.
DiOdoardo said the couples remained close following their wedding and took family vacations together, traveling to Switzerland and Italy.
He said their lives were filled with family pig roasts, sausage- making and tomato-canning parties and children's sleepovers.
"She was very genuinely nice," DiOdoardo said.
His daughter Gina, 9, recalled her Aunt Carol as fun and "creative."
"She always did crafts and stuff," Gina said. "One time we wrote with crayons on a piece of paper and ironed it on our shirts."
Gina said she cried when her mother told her what had happened to her aunt.
DiOdoardo said he kept his four children home from school Tuesday and planned to join other family members at Carol and Fausto's house.
"It still doesn't seem like it really happened," said DiOdoardo.
