Hamptons.com- April 24, 2008
Southampton - Village Hall was adorned in a black drape Tuesday in honor of former Southampton Village Mayor Peter J. Majkowski, Jr. who passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 17, in Rochester, NY. He was 94 years old. Born to immigrant Polish parents in Goldens Bridge, NY, Mayor Majkowski grew up in Southampton Village and was a graduate of Southampton High School, participating on the track and basketball teams. After a brief try at a business curriculum at NY University, Majowski followed his true calling and in 1940 was awarded a degree in Ornamental Horticulture at the State Institute of Applied Agriculture at Farmingdale, Long Island. This led to employment at the Mitchell Estate in Westbury, NY, where his work in the greenhouses earned many accolades for the Mitchell Estate, including numerous ribbons from the New York Flower Show.
During World War II, Majkowski supported the war effort with a stint at Grumman Aircraft on Long Island, where war planes were manufactured. Peace time found Majkowski temporarily employed at his parents' business, the very popular Pete's Inn in Bridgehampton, before assuming his final career with the Suffolk County Health Department, from which he retired in 1974. Mayor Majkowski, or simply "Pete" as he was known by many locals, loved two things above all else – his wife, Mary Jane , to whom he was married for 67 years, and the Village of Southampton, which he served as Village Trustee for eight years and then as Mayor for another eight years, from 1971 to 1979. During his tenure, he established the Parks Department and the Buildings Maintenance Department, which are credited with saving considerable tax dollars to provide essential services to Village residents. Majkowski's support was crucial to efforts to increase the open space in the Village for enjoyment by its residents. Working with Trustees Orson Munn, Charles Schrier and others, Majkowski was instrumental in increasing open space in the Village from three acres to over 100 acres, including Lola Prentice Park and other parklands near the ocean surrounding Shinnecock Inlet. After he stepped down as Mayor, Majkowski continued to serve the Village as chairman of the Tree Committee which, among other activities, cataloged and saved a number of threatened American Elm trees. In her eulogy to Mayor Majokoswki, Southampton Town Councilperson Nancy Graboski graciously evoked the fondness and respect of the community he served: "Peter cared dearly about his family and his church. He also cared about this community. He was a friend to everyone who knew him and cared deeply about the people who live here. He had a real understanding of what a special place Southampton is. He worked hard at a critically important time to make sure that the proper measures were put in place. "Early on he saw how important it was to protect our natural resources and open spaces so that we didn't end up looking like towns up-the-Island. He was a fine public servant who really cared and who made sure that everything was done properly. Peter understood the realities of government and politics and worked hard to do the right thing. We thank his family for sharing him with us all those years," Graboski added. Majkowski is survived by his daughters, Pamela Poduska of Pittsford, NY, and Linda Clineburg of St. Michaels, MD, and by five adoring grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. His wife, Mary Jane, predeceased him in 2005. Visitation was held on Monday, April 21, at the O'Connell Funeral Home in Southampton. A funeral service was held at Our Lady of Poland R.C. Church in Southampton, on Tuesday, April 22, following a procession lead by the Village Fire Department down Main Street. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to The Village of Southampton to provide a memorial bench to honor the former Mayor's memory.

A Teacher Fondly Remembered

(Editor's Note: The following was the eulogy read during funeral services last month for Mrs. Barbara Sloyer who had taught in the Saucon Valley School District for 26 years. Mrs. Hitchcock is director of resident's education, Good Shepherd Home, Allentown.)

By PRISCILLA HITCHCOCK

I am grateful for the honor and privilege to stand before you today and speak in tribute to the memory of a beloved teacher and friend. I say these words as a former student of Barbara Sloyer, as a mother who witnesses her effects on two generations, and as a teacher myself.

I speak first as her student and for the hundreds of students she has taught. We thank her, not only for the academics, but more important, for the values she instilled in each one of us. She taught us self discipline and self respect. She forced us to look inside ourselves and pull forth whatever talents and abilities we had, even some we didn't know we had. She made us aware of our potential and then guided us appropriately to fulfill it.

She loved this country, and shared that love with many children who never had the opportunity to see our nation. She made us take pride in our nation and realize the privelege and honor we had in being Americans.

This sense of patriotic pride, instilled by her, touched the hearts and minds of future soldiers, doctors, lawyers, teachers, and most important...many young mothers and fathers.

I speak now as a mother myself who witnessed the beauty of Mrs. Sloyer's ability to span a generation with her love. She loved her students as a mother and she had many children. It was with great joy and pride that I watched as my own son, Heath, grew under her guidance.

She loved him as she did me, and made that love obvious to both of us. What greater gift can a parent receive than to see their children touched by the same hand and heart that guided their own?

I speak finally as a teacher myself, who knows too well the responsibilities and duties that go along with the privilege of teaching. I recall an incident which happened to me as I was a young mother, walking through a cemetery in Ohio with my two small children. It was an old and beautiful cemetery and I enjoyed reading the names and epitaphs on the headstones, which dated back to the 18th century.

One which I discovered was that of a teacher and it read, "A teacher may never know how far her influence will go." At this time, I was just completing my degree in education through night school, and those few words seemed to make my struggle worthwhile.

The truly remarkable thing that occurred at that moment howeve, was the fact that my thoughts reflected to my own fifth grade experience and my beloved teacher, Miss Gross, whom I hadn't seen in fifteen years. It seemed strangely appropriate that I stood there, four hundred miles away, as a mother and teacher, and realized how far indeed her influence had gone.

I promised myself, that on my next visit home, I would find her and tell her that she was the reason that I wanted to be a teacher, and hopefully as excellent as she had been. I kept this promise, and when I finally told her, it was received with tears of joy. Later I had the opportunity to teach right beside her room.

And so as we gather here to honor our beloved teacher, wife, sister, daughter anf friend, it is of comfort to know that we have already seen where some of her influence has gone, but none of us will ever know how many young people will continue to be touched, for generations to come, and in many far away places, by the loving hand of Barbara Sloyer.

I thank God for the blessing of knowing her. I know there are many young people here today, that will also thank God for this blessing...and her memory and influence will go on for generations to come.
