Harvey F. Sloyer, 1209 Main St., Hellertown, has been a member of the supervisory force since 1912. He started work in No. 2 machine shop in June 1907, as a lathe operator. In 1912 he was made assistant general foreman, night turn, in the projectile shop with supervision over pattern storage, loading, etc. He became foreman in 1919. The projectile shop was discontinued after World War 1 becoming forge specialty and since then Sloyer has been foreman in charge of roll grinding. Born near Friedensville, Upper Saucon Twp., Nov. 11, 1890, Sloyer was the son of Aaron and Emma Schnell Sloyer. His father was employed by the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad (now the Reading Railroad). A brother Charles worked on the steel plant railroad until his death. Sloyer married Mabel Dimmich of Bingen, and they are the parents of two sons and a daughter. Merritt is a machinist at the steel plant; Russell works for Air Reduction in Allentown. Mildred is the wife of Louis Kardos, employed by Lehigh Mills. There are two grandchildren. The Sloyers are active members of the New Jerusalem Lutheran Church. An ardent sportsman, Sloyer intends to continue fishing in the lakes and streams of nearby counties. He will do some gardening and “of course” he says “my wife and I expect to travel”.

PENNSYLVANIA-GERMAN RITES DRAW ATTENDANCE OF 250 IN BETHLEHEM
by RICHARD DRUCKENBROD, The Morning Call
Nearly 250 men and women gathered in the Masonic Temple Banquet Hall on Wednesday evening to celebrate the 43rd ''Pennsylvania-Deitsch Versammling von Bedlehem unn Umgegend'' (Pennsylvania-German Versammling of Bethlehem and vicinity).
Promptly at 6:30 p.m. the ''Raat'' (council) proceeded to the front of the banquet room and assembled at the head table. Proceedings were initiated by ''Der Vormeeschder'' (the master of ceremonies) Richard E. Hoffman of Bethlehem. The assembly raised voices in singing of ''Amerikaa,'' after which Pastor Roy Meck of Bath expressed the thanks for the group in ''Es Gebet'' (the prayer). Special note was made in ''die ruhichi Minutt'' (the quiet moment) of Marilyn Rader, late of Belfast, and John Bergstresser of Hellertown, both members of the ''Raat'' who died in the past year.
''Der Heffentrager unn sei Buwe'' (Heffentrager and his boys) provided music during the ''Feschtesse'' (banquet), with ''Heffy'' himself entertaining the group with his own inimitable ''Gschichde'' (stories).
The staff of the Masonic Templepresented a meal appropriate to the appetites of the gathered ''Brieder unn Schweschdere'' (brothers and sisters). ''Der Fuderzeddel'' (the menu) was prefaced with the admonition ''Waer esst mit Verschtand, lebt lang!'' (Whoever eats with reason, lives long). Platters of ''Hinkel unn Rindsfleesch'' (chicken and beer) were joined by ''Filsel, gedrickeldes Welschkann, unn griene Bohne'' (filling, dried corn and green beans) together with all the trimmings.
Hoffman introduced the members of the ''Raat'' to the assembly and noted that Edward Sloyer of Nazareth was a new ''Raatsglied'' (member of the council) to replace one of the two people who died since the last session.
On being introduced as the speaker of the evening, the Rev. Paul Haas prefaced his remarks by noting that there were no less than five undertakers advertising in the program, wondering whether this said something about the vitality of the Versammling.
Haas said that just as many present had voted on Election Day, that our forefathers had ''voted'' by coming to America in the 18th century. They voted for ''Freiheit'' (freedom), ''Glaawe'' (beliefs), ''fer uff sich selwert acht zu gewwe'' (to take care of themselves), ''fer Lanning'' (for learning and education) and ''fer Gerechdigkeit'' (righteousness). Noting how these were expressed historically, he reminded all present of the continuous need to ''vote'' to affirm and express these same convictions in daily life.
The rafters rang with the group singing the favorite ''Schnitzelbank,'' after which the assembly was dismissed by singing ''Soll alt Bekanntschaft nimmermeh bei uns erinnert sei'' (Should old acquaintance never more by us remembered be) and the ''Noochgebet'' (closing prayer) by ''Parrer'' (Pastor) Harold W. Sell of Allentown.
In addition to Hoffman, officers of this Versammling, which meets each year the day after Election Day, are: Truman Schaffer of Northampton (der Scheiwer/secretary) and J. Sherwood Hickernell of Nazareth (Geldhewer/ treasurer). Other members of the ''Raat'' reside in Bethlehem, Whitehall, Easton, Nazareth, Manheim, Northampton, Bath, Hellertown, Coplay and Allentown.

HOBBY FILLS THE BILL FOR NAZARETH MAN
by KAREN FINNEGAN, The Morning Call
Edward Sloyer's Nazareth home has roosters everywhere - in his office, the kitchen, dining room, living room - everywhere. Even the napkin holder is a rooster.
Sloyer is a retired insurance agent. He lives in a late 1700s home in the borough and is active in numerous volunteer organizations.
Sloyer's interest in roosters dates back to his childhood when he lived on his grandfather William Richter's farm outside Stockertown. He had his own pet rooster he could feed out of his hand. One day, his grandfather made him a proposition - take care of a hen house and keep all the egg money. Sloyer did just that and the money put him through Churchman Business College in Easton.
The collecting part just seemed to follow. Sloyer said his wife purchased some roosters, as did his in-laws many years ago. All are now deceased.
Friends began to find interesting roosters and give them to Sloyer as Christmas or birthday gifts.
It was after Sloyer's wife died 16 years ago that the collection and Sloyer's interest in collecting, really took off.
The result is roosters in every possible media - marble, glass, porcelain, feathers, metals, wood, slate, silk, corn husks and cement. And they adorn every possible table top, window sill, cabinet, wall and even peek out of kitchen cabinets.
The first rooster in the collection was cement, an outdoor ornament. Sloyer recalls the day police called him and asked if he had lost a rooster. ''The police had found the rooster by the mail drop on the Circle,'' Sloyer explained. Everyone decided it was a youthful prank and the rooster was returned in good condition.
One of the first major additions to his collection was a stained glass and wrought iron rooster Sloyer commissioned. The craftsman was a nationally known artist. The artist then made Sloyer a rooster whistle out of clay as a gift.
One particularly interesting acquisition, which Sloyer bought sight unseen, is a picture of fighting fowl done in colorful feathers. Another is a wooden plaque he purchased in Czechoslovakia that says ''Made in U.S.S.R.'' on the back.
Sloyer visited China three years ago. ''I needed an extra suitcase to get home,'' Sloyer recalled. The suitcase, naturally, came back filled with roosters, although Sloyer said the trip was intended for sightseeing. Some of the Chinese pieces are painted, woven baskets in the shape of roosters that can be used for storage. There are tiny jade roosters, mahogany roosters and even silk roosters. One particularly impressive piece from China is a rooster embroidered on silk. The rooster can be viewed from both sides of its circular glass frame because the embroidery was done identically on both sides of the silk.
Sloyer said he was told in China the workmanship is so exacting, the women who do it usually lose the necessary eyesight by the time they are in their 30s.
Sloyer has roosters from Nepal, Paraguay, and even Nazareth.
Every once in a while, Sloyer decides the collection is large enough, but ''I find something irresistible.''
''I don't go out looking, but once a month, I do go antiquing with a friend,'' said Sloyer. Finds on those forays include a real stuffed rooster, a dough rooster and a carved, wooden barnyard scene.
Sloyer has been retired for five years, but still maintains an office in his Nazareth home doing some tax work and typing for friends.
He is very active in several local organizations. He is secretary of the Forks of the Delaware, Hi-12, a retired Masonic organization; treasurer of Easton Forest 35, Tall Cedars of Lebanon; treasurer of the Paxinosa Chapter of the American Association of Retired Persons; active in the Nazareth Lions Club, and a local square dancing group. He also serves on the board of directors of the Northampton County Motor Club.
Sloyer said many local service organizations have asked him to display his collection, but the logistics of packing and transporting even a portion of the collection is a deterrent.
Sloyer has no idea why roosters are so universally popular and why he has been able to add to his collection everywhere he travels. In the nearby Moravian Hall Square Craft Shop he purchased a pillow and miniature rug beater, the pillow with a quilted rooster and the rug beater in the shape of a rooster. In New Hope, it was a lamp shaped like a rooster. In Austria, it was a slate and stone wall hanging. The list is endless. Sloyer even has a hex sign with his name, and, you guessed it, a rooster hex.
Sloyer said he has so many sets of salt and pepper shakers shaped like roosters and hens, he had to pack them in the attic.
He also has some music boxes that play appropriate tunes, like ''Old McDonald Had a Farm'' and ''If I Could Talk to the Animals.''
Some items in the collection are sentimental, like the pictures on the wall of his office that came from a 1923 calendar which belonged to his grandfather. Relatives framed the pictures of roosters and hens and gave them to Sloyer as a Christmas gift after his grandparents died.
Sloyer also has antique metal toys, like a little chick that runs on friction. The drawers of his desk are stuffed with the little goodies.
And there are several small, carved German pieces that depict barnyard scenes. There are roosters made of sea shells and seeds and crewel and Venetian glass.
There is even a cordial set, with the rooster head as the decanter and chicks as the cups. And, there is a rooster, or rather a hen, made of leather and rabbit's fur that can lay eggs.
''I've sort of called a halt,'' said Sloyer of his collecting days.
The ''culmination'' of his collection now is being shipped from Italy. It is an 11-inch carved wooden rooster.
But, consider that volunteers at Moravian Hall Square Craft Shop have a standing request from Sloyer to notify him when a rooster in any form arrives. And then, there are those monthly antiquing jaunts, and perhaps another trip abroad

1999- Uncle Eddie is now in a nursing home in Allentown suffering from Alzheimers Disease. from Peggy Padgett

Jan. 2001 Peggy Padgett writes concerning the above two articles:
Yes, this is my Uncle Eddie. He was a member or officer in several
organizations. I remember when I was in college in 1963, he was
President of the Nazareth Chamber of Commerce. I wrote a paper on the
history of Nazareth, and it was with great pleasure that I quoted him
often. He was a loan officer at the Second National Bank of Nazareth
for several years, so he was a natural for being treasurer of several
clubs and also at church. He was in the Lions club, and I know he was
on the local AAA board. He is a real people person.

He was employed 5 as farmer in 1920 in Pennsylvania. He was employed 6 as carpenter in 1930 in Cement mill.

From Peggy Paggett:Mom told me a funny story about Uncle Bill. When my great uncle, Paul
Heidman died, Uncle Bill went down to Durham to make the arrangements.
She said he went into the church to talk to the minister in his old work
clothes and thought nothing of it. Well apparently it rained on the day
of the funeral, and the minister showed up at church in sneakers. The
Sloyer's were all appalled. They thought it was terrible that a minister
would be in church in sneakers.
We also got produce at Uncle Bill's. My Mother was still buying eggs
from my Aunt Amanda a few years before she died. The thing I remember
most of all was going down there on a day they made horseradish. What a
strong odor!

From Jay Willis: Helped his cousin Daniel (Jay's grandfather) totally refurbished his new home thru 1959-60. Jay likewise remembers going with Amy Sloyer for produce and eggs at "Bill's"

Jay WILLIS note: Miss Jenny in the follwing article from the Monday, January 29, 2007 Easton Express is Jane Sloyer daughter of Augustus and Lillie Sloyer:
Memories up for sale in township Home once a schoolhouse. Recalling a one-room education. Hope that historical group steps up. Monday, January 29, 2007 By COURTNEY LOMAX The Express-Times PALMER TWP. | Dot and Bill Corriere remember sitting on the wooden benches of the one-room schoolhouse on Newlins Mill Road listening to Miss Jenny's lessons 80 years ago. The Palmer couple, married 69 years, remember the beloved teacher at the Butler School toasting their sandwiches in the same potbelly stove on which she dried the students' socks and shoes in the winter. Now Dot and Bill Corriere are 86 and 89 years old, and their son-in-law is selling the one-room schoolhouse built in 1897. Tom Jackson, 51, bought the schoolhouse 30 years ago after it was converted into a home. He lived there until he married Dottie Corriere last year. Now, the couple live across the street from the former school. Jackson put the now one-bedroom house on the market about three weeks ago and said he hopes an historical society can buy it and restore it. Neither the Palmer Township Historical Society nor the Northampton County Historical Society has plans to purchase the building, representatives from the societies said Thursday. "We would hate to see anything happen to it," said Robert Daws, president of the Palmer Township Historical Society. A small group of former students gathered at the house recently and reminisced. The school was one of at least five one-to- two-room schools in Palmer Township. "It's so hard to visualize all of this was in one room," Dot Corriere said. She said about 14 students attended the school and sat on long wooden benches. The older students would help the younger ones understand their lessons. As a little girl, Dot Corriere lived next door to the school and ran over each morning as soon as Miss Jenny turned on the light. "I was always the first one to school and the last one to leave," she said. The group of former students estimated Miss Jenny started teaching at the school about 1925. Miss Jenny taught Sherwood Steward years after she taught the Corrieres. Steward, now 74, remembers sitting under Miss Jenny's desk as a punishment but he said he doesn't remember why he was scolded. "I remember when Miss Jenny got married," Steward said. "She told us the last day of school and we balled like babies." The students remember going to the basement to collect coal to heat the stove and Miss Jenny's encouragement to take in fresh air. When the weather was bad, Miss Jenny would open the windows and lead the children in stretches. She would ask the children to go on their toes and take a deep breath. Bill Corriere demonstrated the motion with a cane in his left hand. Even after they went to high school, Dot Corriere to Nazareth and Bill Corriere to Easton, they still went back to the Butler School and belonged to the Butler Alumni Club. Bill Corriere buried a box with a group of his former classmates in 1932 under one of the trees near the school. The box contained a list of names of the Butler School Alumni Club and stories about the club. He remembers learning all he needed in the one-room school. "If you could read and do math you could do anything."
