A man and a 14-year-old youth, both of Center Valley, were killed early yesterday when their vehicle skidded into a large tree, shearing it at the base, in Upper Saucon Township.
Walter R. Fogel Jr., 23, of 2490 Saucon Drive was westbound in the 4600 block of Camp Meeting Road shortly before 1 a.m. when, traveling at high speed on a straightaway, he skidded across the center lane and lost control, police said.
The vehicle slid sideways 176 feet and slammed into the tree on the driver's side, police said. After shearing the tree, the vehicle traveled an additional 40 feet.
Fogel was flown to Lehigh Valley Hospital Center, where he was pronounced dead at 1:41 a.m. An autopsy yesterday showed he died of multiple traumatic injuries, Lehigh County Coroner Wayne Snyder said.
Fogel's passenger, Michael Weiss, 14, of 2520 Hartman Drive, was pronounced dead at the scene at 1:55 a.m. by Deputy Coroner Paul Zondlo. Snyder said Weiss died of head injuries.
Neither occupant was wearing a safety belt, police said.
Fogel was a salesman at Kool Vent Aluminum Products, 2201 Hanger Place, Hanover Township, since the beginning of March. Before that he was a forklift operator at Triangle Building Center, Quakertown.
Born in Allentown, he was a son of Walter R. Sr. and Pauline G. (Arnold) Fogel, with whom he resided.
Surviving with his parents is a sister, Priscilla J., at home.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Heintzelman Funeral Home, 326 Main St., Hellertown. A calling hour will precede the services.
