Maritimers Ashore and Afloat by Stanley T. Spicer

Maritimers Ashore & Afloat Volume I, Interesting People, Places and Events Related to the Bay of Fundy and its Rivers by Stanley T. Spicer, Lancelot Press, Hantsport, Nova Scotia, 1993, ISBN 0-88999-517-6.

Spicer’s book doesn’t mention anyone in my family but with a bunch of Master Mariners to research, this is interesting to me. This book is a collection of short biographies. It reads like a collection of left over notes for which the author couldn't find another home. All the biographies are interesting and some are riveting. The story of William Hall, V.C. is amazing.

There are many pictures and an extensive bibliography. The short biographies include ship builders, owners, and masters. There is an entire chapter on men awarded the Victoria Cross and a very interesting biography of a nurse on the Western Front in WWI.

The biographies include individuals from the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. All were notable individuals but not all were “successful.” Sometimes the most interesting stories are about those who failed to achieve their goal even with great ingenuity and perseverance. Then there are those who achieved much but lost it all and died penniless and sometimes friendless.
