Saint John Ships and Their Men by Esther Clark Wright

Saint John Ships and Their Men by Esther Clark Wright

Saint John Ships and Their Men by Esther Clark Wright chronicals the merchant sailing vessels built in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada. This book, like those by Wallace, Parker, and Spicer is a chronicle of 19th century ships the the people who built, owned, and sailed them. Wright has a greater interest in genealogy than the other authors and has checked census, newspapers, and other sources for detailed information on the families mentioned in her book.

The introduction to this book is valuable for the detailed description of the sources used by the author. This is the only book I’ve found so far that tells where the ship records are stored, what they contain, and how one might access them. One interesting note is that Wright says that Wallace made mistakes in his books which also covered Saint John.
