THE CHAPMAN FAMILY

This site is developed with many thanks to Karen Heggen [email protected]  She has been a great help in developing the Chapman and the Spradling information.  Karen is a wonderful person, always willing to share what she knows, and I wouldn't know half of what I do without her!  Thank you, Karen.  Others who have shared information are Mark Parsons, Jerry Wentworth, Judge Noble, Tom Chapman and Edward Crutchley.

Cindy Kuhn has worked with me to identify Enoch and Mary Barnet's children and in finding many marriages. Without her, I wouldn't have nearly as much as I have. Evelyn Wilcox is a descendant of Robert, son of Enoch and Mary and has given me his line.

If I have forgotten anyone, I apolgize.  My thanks to all of you.  If you find any errors on this page, or have any additions, please email me and I'll correct or attempt to add them.

NOTES ON JOHN CHAPMAN

Information on the line from John Chapman varies with who you talk:

Edward Crutchley shows line goes from Thomas (1), Thomas (2), John (1), John (2) who married Eurith.

Tom Chapman shows line as Thomas (1), Robert(2), Robert(3), Robert(4), John.

Judge Noble sent info, not proven, that line went thus: Thomas (1) 1613, Robert (2), Robert Jr. (3), John (4)

Info from Jerry Wentworth shows John (1), John (2) & Mary. John (3), .

Most seem to agree on Thomas and his line supposedly goes back from Thomas to Benjamin of Devonshire, England to William  and to an Arthur Champernowne, ca mid 1500's.  None of this is proven,   hopefully, someday we will be able to find sources and prove it one way or the other.

Generation No. 1

1. John1 Chapman (1) was born Abt. 1720 in MD, and died 1780 in Wilkes Co., NC. He married Eurith ? Barnes, who was said to be "of" Baltimore Co., MD.

Notes for John Chapman:

LDS shows John md to Eurith Barnes, does not show son, George, has Nicholas, James, Sarah, John, Enoch, Raleigh and Nathan, all b. MD.  I find no Barnes & Chapman family together on Broderbund's Colonial Census disk and can find none living near each other in the Maryland records.

John Chapman was murdered about 1780 by a Godfrey Isbell.  Isbell fled the area and was never prosecuted. Stories say the reason for the murder was because John Chapman was "a vocal Tory". A very knowledgeable historian in Taylorsville, NC, a Miss Opal Harrington, writes "tradition states it was not in any way connected to the American Revolution.  Both families were Whigs, not Tories."

Notes for Eurith ? Barnes

LDS shows a wife named Eurith \\. This is the only source of her name. However a Eurith Chapman is found on the census for 1790 Rutherford Co., NC. Is it possible that someone used this as her name?

Others show she was a Barnes, no proof

A will was found in Onslow Co., NC which is the only time I find the Chapman and Barnes names associated.

Joseph Barnes Date of will 04 Jul 1755 names:
Son: Hezekiah (land and plantation).
Wife: Ann.
Executors: Ann Barns (wife) and Jonathan Metton.
Witnesses: John CHAPMAN, Margret Morton.
Clerk of the Court: Will. Cray.

Children of John Chapman and Eurith are:

+ 2 i. John2 Chapman, Jr., born Abt. 1750 in Loudon, Virginia; died November 15, 1836 in Wilkes Co., NC.
          + 3 ii. George Chapman, born Bet. 1750 - 1760.
+ 4 iii. Enoch Chapman, born Abt. 1752 in Baltimore Co., MD; died Bet. 1830 - 1834 in Franklin Co., Highland Twp., IN.
+ 5 iv. James Chapman, born Abt. 1753 in Baltimore Co., MD.
+ 6 v. Raleigh Chapman, born Bef. 1755 in Baltimore Co., MD.
7 vi. Nathan Chapman, born Abt. 1755 in Baltimore Co., MD.
+ 8 vii. Nicholas Chapman, born Abt. 1758 in Upper Patapscot River, Baltimore Co., MD; died July 25, 1851 in Burke Co., NC.
9 viii. Sarah Chapman, born Abt. 1769 in Baltimore Co., MD; died 1854.

Notes for Sarah Chapman:  Tom Chapman sent this from the pension papers of Nicholas, "in answer to the interogatories propounded by the court, I was born in the year 1758 in Baltimore County what is now in the state of Maryland. I have no record of my age. But it was recorded in my father's Common prayer book as used by the Church of England, but my sister has taken it off to some new county, and I do not know where it now is."

Per Tom, they lived in Rutherford Co., NC for a time, then moved to the extreme southwestern part of North Carolina. Sarah, as a widow, eventually ended up in Macon Co., GA.  The only Aaron Thomas I can find is Aaron Thomas md Sarah Silvy in Rutherford Co., NC Dec 29, 1797, they moved to Macon Co., GA where he died, she is the widow found there.

             10 ix. Robert Chapman.

Generation No. 2

2. John2 Chapman, Jr. (John1) was born Abt. 1750 in Loudon, Virginia, and died November 15, 1836 in Wilkes Co., NC (Source: WFT Vol 7, Tree #1893.). He married Leanna Brown January 18, 1779 in Wilkes Co., NC, daughter of George Brown and Eve. She was born Bet. 1760 - 1767, and died Aft. July 27, 1843.

Notes for John Chapman, Jr.:

Ref. Revolutionary War Soldiers of Western NC.; Burke Co., Vol. 1
John Chapman: born Loudon Co., VA. 1750. At age 15, he moved to Rowan Co., (later Burke Co., and then Wilkes Co.) NC .  He was living in Burke Co. at the beginning of the Rev. War.

Summary of Mil. Serv.

John Chapman entered Rev. service as a volunteer militiaman in a ranger company of light horse commanded by Captain (later Lt. Col.) Robert Holmes of McDowells Reg't. (1780). Later he served another tour of duty with Captain Holmes in Colonel Francis Locke's Rowan Reg't. He served in a third tour of duty in light horse under Capt. John Bickerstaff for a period of three months. Their main duties were keeping the Tories of Burke Co. in check. His fourth term of duty was a three months tour under Capt. Henry Highland of McDowell's Reg't. He again served in light horse and was in a raid against the Cherokee. In his pension declaration he said that he served until April, 1783. He also stated that he was at the Battle of Guilford Courthouse (Mar. 15, 1781) and in the Wilmington Expedition of Sep-Dec 1781.

He applied for Revolutionary War pension in Wilkes Co., NC 1832, age 84. He was awarded $60.00 per annum. In his pension statements, he is erroneously listed as "Joseph" Chapman.

His widow received pension in 1843, age 82.

"Enock (sic) Chapman had an entry in Burke Co. on Jan. 22, 1779, on Lower Little River for 216 acres of land adjoining Edwin Brown and Richard Hood. The chain carriers for the survey were Edwin Brown and John Hood. Enock Chapman would be about the same age as John Chapman and was probably a brother." (Source: The Heritage of Alexander Co., NC.)

Notes for Ruth Barnes: The parents of Ruth Barnes, given as Reuben and Isabell Greer in a book, Facts And Events of the Chapman Family, by Roy H. Chapman 1949. I wonder, though, she has no child named for either Reuben or Isabell.   She does have children named Solomon and Elizabeth.  The will of Solomon Barnes was probated Feb 1807, one month before she married, and names one daughter Ruth Barnes.  Some folk think that these were her parents.

Some say she died in Union Co., GA, but I don't find her on 1860 census with Enoch or Solomon.

Notes for Robert Chapman:  Wrote to Evelyn Wilcox is a descendant of Robert's, and she disagrees as to this info on Anne Martin, she says there were two Roberts, one married Anne Martin in TN and the other married Margaret Cummins in KY.  She says this Robert's first wife might have been a Spradlin(g).

We find Robert on the census for 1810, Rutherford Co., NC; 1820 and 1830, Harrison Co., KY and 1840, Edgar Co., IL.  Margaret is on the 1850 Jasper Co., IL census.  In addition, we find a Robert on the 1817 tax list for Franklin Co., IN.  Harrison Co., KY is just a few miles north of Franklin Co., IN.  About 1830 several families from the Bullitt and Nelson Co., KY area moved up to Clark Co., IL, I would assume they sent word back about the better land they found.  This might be why Robert decided to move there.

Children of Robert Chapman and Unknown are:
