REUTENAUER

I found most of this information using two references,.  The first was "ANCESTORS ARE FOREVER, A RIDENOUR COLLECTION FROM 893 AD TO 2000 AD" by Melvin Otho "Mo" Ridenour.  This is a most wonderful document, 1544 pages long!  It can be accessed online at Elmer Eugene Ridenour's website.  The second was the book, "REITENAUER IMMIGRANTS, The Early Years", compiled and written by Nona Harwell & Mona McCown.  I have not attempted to place all of the lines carried in either souce: basically, I followed what would become my line, but I have picked up much information since from other sources.  I have been working backward, seeking to find sources, but am nowhere near proving everything.   What I have found, I show 'SOURCE' in the notes.  If you have any corrections or additions, please email me.

"The father of the above HANS REITENAUER was most likely Anton Reitnower who married Margeret Christen in Condiswill, Switzerland, Aargau Canton) [2-4-1611]"

Generation No. 5

7. JOHANN NICHOLAUS5 REUTENAUER, III (JOHAN NICOLAUS4, NICHOLAUS "CLAUS"3, HANS2, ANTON 1 REITNOWER) was born February 14, 1710/11 in Rexingen, Alsace, Bas-Rhin, France17,18, and died 1795 in Maryland. He married ANNA MARGARETHA GERBER November 10, 1736 in Durstal, Alsace, France19. She was born Abt. 172120.

From Reitenauer Immigrants, The Early Years by Nona Harwell and Mona McCown.  "Nicholas and (possibly, Maria Magdalena) and younger children came to America on the ship "Robert and Alice" the next year, 1739 (arriving in Philadelphia and signing the oath on Sept 3, 1739) It isn't known if Maria Magdalena was still living at that time or when she died. No death record for her has been found in Alsace or America. She was still living in Rexingen in 1731, when she was sponsor for a child."

"29 Jan 1750 - Frederick Co., Maryland - Nicholas Reitenauer and "wife" were sponsors for the baptism of "Maria Magdalena, daughter of Peter Reitenauer" As Peter was the son of Nicholas and Maria Magdalena (Arnet) Reitenauer; it is probable that this child was named for Peter's mother. But it is unknown if the "wife" of Nicholas here was Maria Magdalena (Arnet) or a second wife."

"The "mother' of Mathias Ridenour was mentioned in an indenture of 1760 as follows:  "...Said Mathias Ridenour shall pay 15 pounds to (his brother) Nicholas Ridenour ...after mother's decease." This Mathias and Nicholas were both sons of Nicholas and Maria Magdalena (Arnet) Reitenauer. Evidently, a wife of the older Nicholas Reitenauer was still living after his death (about 1760). However, the fact that she was called the "mother of Mathias" does not indicate that she was Maria Magdalena (Arnet). Stepmothers were often identified this way in Colonial wills."

"We may never know if Rosina Kershner was the second wife of Nicholas Reitenauer. However, from the records, we know that his first wife and the mother of all his known children was Maria Magdalena Arnet."

And whereas Henry Ridenour, by his last will, devised to his sons the above tract of 240a, now for 5 sh. Nicholas Ridenour quitclaims to 100a. Wit: John Shull, Andrew Rentch. The tract, called Nicholas Ridenour's Pond, adjoins a small road leading from John Thomases' land toward Geo. Castner's, about 5 miles south of Conagoshege, with all rights and benefits (royal mines excepted) in the Manor of Conegochege in full and common socage by fealty for all manner of services, yielding and payinf us, our heirs, at St. Mary's City at the two most usual feasts in the year: Feast of Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary and Feast of St. Michael the Archangel, by even portions of 4 sh. sterling. In case of alienation (transfering property to another person), a fine of one year's rent, which, if not paid within one month, the alienation shall be void. 22 Oct. 1742. Current deed made and recorded 4 Jan. 1783. (pp210-16)"

In the Land Office, Annapolis, Maryland, August 1743 a patent was issued to Nicholas Ridenour, of Prince George County, for 100 acres called Ridenours Pond. According to Certificate of Survey, October 22, it is near the road from John Thomas to N.E. of a pond about five miles from Conocoheague. Conocoheague is a village six miles directly west of present Hagerstown, Maryland on a stream of the same name which rises in Pennsylvania and flows into the Potomac at Williamsport. This tract, as appears from the patent, was called 'Nicholas Reitenaurer's Pond.'

The town of Hagerstown was named for John Hager a brother-in-law of Nicholas Ridenour.

Notes for MARIA ROSINA BARBARA PFLUEGER:  Source: "The Flickinger Family History" GenealogyLibrary.com   "Pflueger is German for plougher/farmer:   In the history of Hutwil, Switzerland, a century later the name is spelled Flukiger eight times in 1834; Fluckiger, five times during the period 1842-1899; and Fluckinger three for the early period 1382 to 1438. These four variations suggest a combination of Pfluege-iunger, a follower of the plow. If the son was known as a junior, then Pflueger-iunger, the junior plougher, or, young farmer. A derivation of the name is Flickinger Flueger, Flieger.
