898. George Hunt SHULTS

Rachel was apparently first married to a WALTON as that's her name on the marriage license. Joanna was a sister of Salina who married Joseph Shults (her name was listed as "Jodie" in the 1900 census. George was Postmaster of the SHULTS post office in Sevier County from March 1890 till April 1900. This post office was located near Emerts Cove and was closed in 1903. {Oscar Shults served as Postmaster at SHULTS from 1883 to 1887.] Sometime after 1900 George moved his family to Oklahoma (they appear in the 1900 Sevier Co, TN census). After he died there in 1909 Joanna and the children moved back to Tennessee, then very shortly moved on to Spartanburg, SC to work in the cotton mills. Joanna was gone from Tennessee before the 1910 census.


2017. Emma SHULTS

She died young and is buried on the old Perry Shults home place on Webbs Creek. Unless there's still another child she was called SARAH in the 1880 census and had to have died after 1880.


2020. Maude SHULTS

Maude had no children. Willis Burress had a son from a previous marriage who Maude refused to accept, so he was raised by his Buress grandparents, Willis's parents.


899. Caroline Matilda SHULTZ

Her name also appears as CATHERINE, she apparently went by MATILDA. If the census dates are correct she wed VERY young and had her first child by the time she was 16! In an old family Bible her name is writtten as 'Matilda Caroline".


Martin vanBuren SHULTS

He's a Union Army veteran of the Civil War, 1862-1865, K Co, 11th TN Cavalry.


900. Philip SHULTZ

Arbizena was a half-sister of James "Uncle Bud" McCarter who married Josephine Shults, and a half-sister of Edmond McCarter who wed Linura Shults.

They had a son, before 1910.

John's the son of Eli and Sarah "Sally" (McMahan) Ogle.


902. Joseph Alva SHULTS Rev.

He was a Methodist preacher who rode a circuit on horse-back. He was one of the founders of and contributed land for Webbs Creek Church and cemetery. He was blind in the later years of his life. Mary Caton's name had appeared in the census records as "Mary M", she was generally known as "Malinda", and also "Lindy", but the name on her tombstone is "Mary Belinda". She had two earlier marriages, first to John S. DENNIS, with children: Dr. N.L. Dennis, and J.A. Dennis; then to Rufus Wesley LANDRUM, with a daughter Margaret Viola and a son, Rufus Jr.


Mary Belinda CATON

In the 1900 Cocke Co, TN census the widowed Mary and her children were in the h/h of her father, Stephen. She had two DENNIS children, Noah L. and James L, and two LANDRUM children, Margaret and Rufus.


903. George McCown SHULTZ


Martha was PROBABLY the daughter of Mary McMahan. A Mary McMahan, 48, and Sarah McMahan, 12, were living with George and Martha in the 1880 census. Althea (her name also appears as 'Alpha') was POSSIBLY the daughter of J.M. and Rosanna Blalock. George's farm adjoined the property of J.M. Blalock. Althea is PROBABLY the "Dialthea SHULTS" who married J.L. Palmer on 31 Oct 1905 in Sevier Co, TN. If so, she and George had to have divorced, since that was before George's death.


909. Alexander Nelson "Nelse" SHULTZ

Margaret and Nelse were living with his mother, Mary, in the 1880 Sevier Co census, and were in Knox Co in 1900. Nelson appears in the 1901 Knoxville Directory, residing at 953 Wray St, no occupation listed. His daughters, Algia and Carrie, appear, unmarried, in the city directory as late as 1911. Carrie worked at Brookside Mills.


2079. Mary A. SHULTZ

Had married a Ramsey and was living with her parents, without her husband, in 1900.


2080. Marilda SHULTZ

Probably married Thomas Foster in Knox Co in 1905.

His name also appears as WOODFIN.

Her name also appears as "Laura", "Luna", "Lenna", "Malinda", and "Sophia". Funeral home records have her name as "Linda"! What's shown here is from her headstone. His name also appears as"Edman" and "Edward"! He's a brother of James who married Josephene Shults and a half-brother of Arbezene who married Philip Shults. The marriage date shown is the date of the license, which was never returned.

He was struck and killed by an ambulance on the highway near Gatlinburg.

Thomas was a veteran of the Civil War, Company M, 9th Volunteer Cavalry, from 12 Jun 1862-11 Sep 1865.

Ella never had children. John was the son of William and Mary (Gillett) Wood. Isaac was the son of Luther and Mary Jane (Boyer) Hawk.
