First Generation in Australia

Edward BROMLEY
Edward was born about 1828, probably in England or Ireland. ~s05
Edward migrated to South Australia sometime before May 1850.

 

Hannah McCARTHY
Hannah was born about 1822, probably in England or Ireland. ~ s05
Hannah migrated into Port Adelaide, South Australia on Friday 11th May 1849 on the  STEBONHEATH. ~s22

Hannah applied for assisted passage to South Australia.
Hannah was aged about 27 years and possibly travelling alone, when she embarked from London.
The STEBONHEATH sailed sailed from Plymouth on Wednesday 31st January 1849.  The voyage to South Australia took three months and 10 days. ~s22

STEBONHEATH  was a 1013 ton ship, built in Hull in 1842-3.
It underwent repairs in 1845 and 1848.  It's measurements were 145.3' x 33.0' x 23.3'.
The Captain was John Sargeant and the ship was owned by Wilson & Co. ~s23

Edward BROMLEY married Hannah MCCARTHY
on Monday 29th April 1850
Adelaide, South Australia.

Edward and Hannah were married in the Trinity Church.  Edward was a butcher and a bachelor aged 22 years.  Hannah was a spinster aged 28 years.  The witnesses were Samuel McCarthy and Elizabeth Mitchell.
- Edward signed the register with an "X"
- Samuel McCarthy was probably a relation, a brother, an uncle, or ... ~s01, s02

Their marriage registration was No 1512.  They were married ...
"in the Parish Church according to the Rites and Ceremonies
of the United Church of England and Ireland by banns by ... James Jarrell .."

Eliza Hannah BROMLEY, their 1st child, was born on Tuesday 11th March 1851 in Hindmarsh, Adelaide.
Edward was aged about 23 years and Hannah was aged about 29 years.

Louisa Matilda BROMLEY, their 2nd child, was born on Sunday 27th March 1853 in Adelaide.
Edward was aged about 25 years and Hannah was aged about 31 years.

Frederick Edward BROMLEY, their 3rd child, was born on Wednesday 25th July 1855 in Parklands, Adelaide.
Edward was aged about 27 years and Hannah was aged about 33 years.

Amy Ellen BROMLEY, their 4th child, was born on Sunday 3rd January 1858 in Thebarton, Adelaide.
Edward was aged about 30 years and Hannah was aged about 36 years.

Amy Ellen BROMLEY  died on Sunday 26th September 1858 in Thebarton, Adelaide.
Amy was aged 9 months.

Louisa Matilda BROMLEY  died on Thursday 12th May 1859 in Walkerville, Adelaide.
Louisa was aged 6 years.

Bertha Amelia BROMLEY, their 5th child, was born on Saturday 17th December 1859 in Walkerville, Adelaide.
Edward was aged about 31 years and Hannah was aged about 37 years.

Eliza Hannah BROMLEY  married  Robert George DOUGLAS in March 1870 in Adelaide.
Edward was aged about 42 years and Hannah was aged about 48 years.
Edward and Hannah's first three grand children were
- Alice Maud DOUGLAS, born in August 1871 in Adelaide,
- Alexander George DOUGLAS, born in July 1873 in Adelaide and
- Frederick Arthur DOUGLAS, born in February 1876 in Thebarton.

Frederick Edward BROMLEY  married  Minnie Elizabeth ROBINS in January 1877 in the Burra District.
Edward was aged about 49 years and Hannah was aged about 56 years.
Edward and Hannah's fourth grandchild was  Hannah Elizabeth BROMLEY, born in October 1877 in Burra.

Edward and Hannah had the following children :

1 F Eliza Hannah BROMLEY  was born on 11th March 1851 in Hindmarsh, Adelaide, South Australia.
Eliza married  Robert George DOUGLAS.
Eliza and Robert George are my Great Grandparents.
2 F Louisa Matilda BROMLEY  was born on 27th March 1853 in Adelaide, South Australia.
Louisa died on 12th May 1859 in Walkerville, Adelaide.
Louisa was aged 6 years. ~s02
3 M Frederick Edward BROMLEY  was born on 25th July 1855 in Parklands, Adelaide, South Australia.
4 F Amy Ellen BROMLEY  was born on 3rd January 1858 in Thebarton, Adelaide, South Australia.
Amy died on 26th September 1858 in Thebarton, Adelaide.
Amy was aged 9 months.
5 F Bertha Amelia BROMLEY  was born on 17th December 1859 in Walkerville, Adelaide, South Australia.

Edward BROMLEY  died on Tuesday 19th March 1878 in Thebarton, Adelaide, South Australia.
Edward was buried on Thursday 21st March 1878 in West Terrace Cemetery.  Edward was aged 51 years.
Edward's cause of death was Phthisis.  The term is no longer in scientific use. ~ s01, s02 ~s12
Note-   Phthisis was any disease causing a wasting away of part or all of the body, especially tuberculosis; consumption.

Hannah BROMLEY became a widow after 28 years of marriage.  Hannah was aged 57 years and had 3 surviving children :
  • Eliza Hannah was aged 27 years and married to Robert George DOUGLAS with 3 children
  • Frederick Edward was aged 22 years and married to Minnie with 1 child
  • Bertha Amelia was aged 18 years

  • Hannah lived for another 28 years :
  • Eliza and Robert had 8 more children and 18 grand children
  • Eliza and Robert moved to the West Coast, back to Thebarton and then to Broken Hill
  • Edward and Minnie had 7 more children and 4 grand children
  • Edward and Minnie lived in Burra, then moved to Broken Hill
  • Bertha married John WILSON and had 5 children
  • Bertha and John lived near Port Augusta briefly, before moving back to Adelaide

  • Hannah out lived :
  • her husband
  • 2 daughters
  • 4 grandsons
  • 3 great grandsons
  • 1 great grandaughter
  • Hannah BROMLEY nee McCARTHY  died on Saturday 28th July 1906 in Adelaide, South Australia.
    Hannah's cause of death was "Senile Decay".  Hannah had been living in the Destitute Asylum on North Terrace.
    Hannah was buried on Monday 30th July 1906 in West Terrace Cemetery.  Hannah was aged 83 years.

    Hannah's death was registered on 2nd August 1906 by the undertaker.
    Hannah and Edward are buried together in West Terrace Cemetery.
    Their grave is in Road 4, row p4, grave 30 east.  There is no memorial or other markers. ~s01, s02 s12

    died on Saturday 28th July 1906
    in Adelaide, South Australia
    aged 83 years

    and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

    Their descendants have spread throughout Australia.
