Elizabeth ROBERTSON

Robert DOUGLAS 
Robert was born about 1804 in Scotland.
Robert DOUGLAS was a crewman on the sailing ship Lady Bute on Tuesday 18th June 1839,
when it arrived in Port Adelaide, South Australia.  Robert was aged about 35 years. ~s24, s99

 

Elizabeth ROBERTSON 
Elizabeth was born about 1820 in Scotland.

Elizabeth applied for free passage to South Australia.  She migrated from Greenock, Scotland on Thursday 31st January 1839.
Elizabeth seems to have travelled alone, on the 4 months and 18 day voyage via Madiera, Spain.
Elizabeth was one of 61 passengers on Tuesday 18th June 1839 on the sailing ship Lady Bute
when it arrived in Port Adelaide, South Australia.  Elizabeth was aged about 19 years. ~s21, s22, s99

Elizabeth probably met Robert during the voyage from Scotland to South Australia.

Robert DOUGLAS probably married Elizabeth ROBERTSON
some time after their arrival
in South Australia.

Robert George DOUGLAS  was born on Saturday 9th May 1840 in Adelaide.  Robert George was their 1st child.
Robert was a sailmaker aged about 36 years, Elizabeth was aged about 20 years and the family was living in Pirie Street.
Robert George DOUGLAS was baptised on Sunday 2nd August 1840 in the Trinity Church, Adelaide.

Robert DOUGLAS  was counted in the census in January 1841 in South Australia.
Robert was living in Pirie Street, Adelaide.  He was listed as "under 35".
The other occupants were listed as 1 female under 35, 1 male under 7 and 1 female under 7. ~s08
Notes - the female under 35 was probably Elizabeth, Robert's wife
- the male under 7 was probably Robert George, Robert's son, aged about 7 months.
- the female under 7 may have been part of the family,  if so, she was probably older than Robert George.

Isabella Jane DOUGLAS  was born on Sunday 19th June 1842 in Adelaide.  Isabella was their 2nd child.
Robert was a sailmaker aged about 38 years, Elizabeth was aged about 22 years and the family was living in Pirie Street.
Isabella was baptised on Friday 9th October 1942 in the Trinity Church, Adelaide. ~s03
Note - Isabella may have died in infancy, possibly before the birth of the next child

Catherine DOUGLAS  was born on Saturday 7th September 1844, in Adelaide.  Catherine was their 3rd child.
Robert was a sailmaker aged about 40 years, Elizabeth was aged about 24 years and the family was living in Pirie Street.
Catherine was baptised on Sunday 24th May 1846 in Adelaide, South Australia.

William Alexander DOUGLAS  was probably born on Saturday 23rd January 1847 in Adelaide.  William was their 4th child.
Robert was a sailmaker aged about 43 years, Elizabeth was aged about 27 years and the family was living in Pirie Street.
Notes - William's birth does not seem to have been registered
- his birth date comes from "BISA".  The entry indicates he was born in England, but ...
- his marriage and burial records and his mother's death and burial records firmly 'locate' him into this family

Hugh DOUGLAS  was born on Monday 2nd April 1849, in Adelaide.  Hugh was their 5th child.
Robert was a sailmaker aged about 45 years, Elizabeth was aged about 29 years and the family was living in Pirie Street.

Colin DOUGLAS  was born on Wednesday 24th September 1851, in Adelaide.  Colin was their 6th child.
Robert was a sailmaker aged about 47 years, Elizabeth was aged about 31 years and the family had moved to Flinders Street.
Robert registered Colin's birth on Monday 3rd November 1851. ~s01, s02

Colin DOUGLAS  probably died on Tuesday 31st May 1853 in Adelaide. ~s02
Colin was probably buried in West Terrace Cemetery.  Colin was aged just 20 months. ~s99

Elizabeth DOUGLAS  was born on Saturday 11 March 1854 in Adelaide.  Elizabeth was their 7th child.
Robert was a sailmaker aged about 50 years, Elizabeth was aged about 34 years and the family was living in Flinders Street.
Elizabeth was baptised on Thursday 16th November 1854 in Adelaide, South Australia.

Jane Chalmes DOUGLAS  was born on Friday 25th July 1856 in Adelaide.  Jane was their 8th child.
Robert was a Tentmaker aged about 52 years, Elizabeth was aged about 36 years and the family was living in Flinders Street.
Jane was baptised on Sunday 14th September 1856 in the Holy Trinity Church, Adelaide.

Robert's changing of occupation from sailmaker to tentmaker,
would have been due to the reducing use of sailing ships,
as steam ships became cheaper to use and build.


John Ingram DOUGLAS  was born on Wednesday 13th March 1859 in Adelaide.  John was their 9th child.
Robert was aged about 55 years and Elizabeth was aged about 39 years.

Shelto DOUGLAS  was born on Wednesday 4th March 1863 in Adelaide.  Shelto was their 10th child.
Robert was a "Government Tent Maker" aged about 59 years and Elizabeth was aged about 43 years.

Shelto DOUGLAS  died on Sunday 15th March 1863 in Adelaide.  Shelto's cause of death was recorded as "Premature Birth".
Shelto was buried on Monday 16th March 1863 in West Terrace Cemetery.  Shelto was aged just 11 days.
Shelto's grave  is in Road 1 South, row 38 east,, grave 33.  There is no memorial or other marker.
Shelto's birth and death were registered by his father on Monday 16th March, the same day he was buried. ~s01, s02, s12

Robert and Elizabeth had 10 children over a period of 23 years.
All were born in Adelaide.  Two, maybe three died in infancy.
Two of the surviving children married during Robert and Elizabeth's 32 years together.

Catherine DOUGLAS  married Robert BURGESS in November 1864 in Adelaide.
Robert was aged about 60 years and Elizabeth was aged about 44 years.

Robert George DOUGLAS  married Eliza Hannah BROMLEY in March 1870 in Adelaide.
At this time, Robert was aged about 66 years and Elizabeth was aged about 50 years.

Robert married  Eliza Hannah BROMLEY.
Robert and Eliza are my Great Grandparents.

3 F Catherine DOUGLAS  was born on 7th September 1844 in Adelaide.
4 M William Alexander DOUGLAS  was born on 23rd January 1847 in Adelaide.
5 M Hugh DOUGLAS  was born on 2nd April 1849 in Adelaide.
6 M Colin DOUGLAS  was born on 24th September 1851 in Adelaide.
7 F Elizabeth DOUGLAS  was born on 11th March 1854 in Adelaide.
8 F Jane Chalmes DOUGLAS  was born on 25th July 1856 in Adelaide.
9 M John Ingram DOUGLAS  was born on 13th March 1859 in Adelaide.
10 M Shelto DOUGLAS  was born on 4th March 1863 in Adelaide.

Robert DOUGLAS  died on Friday, 20th January 1871 in Adelaide, South Australia.  Robert's cause of death was Phthisis.
Robert was buried on Saturday, 21st January 1871 in West Terrace Cemetery.  Robert was aged 67 years.
Robert's grave  is in Road 3, row 8 west, grave 34.  There is no memorial or other markers.
Notes - Phthisis was any disease causing a wasting away of part or all of the body, especially tuberculosis; consumption.

Elizabeth DOUGLAS was married for about 31 years , she became a widow at 51 years of age, with 7 surviving children :
  • Robert George DOUGLAS aged 30 years, married to Eliza and expecting their first child
  • Catherine BURGESS aged 26 years, widowed with an infant boy
  • William Alexander DOUGLAS aged 23 years
  • Hugh DOUGLAS aged 21 years
  • Elizabeth aged 16 years
  • Jane aged 14 years
  • John aged 11 years

  • Elizabeth lived a another 33 years :
  • Robert George and Eliza had 11 children
  • Catherine married again, to William BISHOP and had 8 more children
  • William Alexander married Mary Vincent and had 7 children
  • Hugh married Elizabeth Fenthan and had 3 children
  • Hugh married again, to Frances McDonald
  • Elizabeth married Richard WATSON and had 4 children
  • Jane married Arthur HAWSON
  • John Ingram married Augusta BURKERDT and had 5 children

  • Elizabeth out lived :
  • her husband
  • 2 more sons, John and William
  • 9 of the above 38 grand children
  • Elizabeth DOUGLAS nee ROBERTSON  died on Saturday 31st October 1903 in Wilsden St, Walkerville, Adelaide, South Australia.
    Elizabeth's cause of death was Bronchitis and Exhaustion.
    Elizabeth was buried on Sunday 1st November 1903 in West Terrace Cemetery.  Elizabeth was aged 83 years.
    Elizabeth was buried with her son, William Alexander DOUGLAS (died 1898, aged 51 years).
    Their grave  is in Road 1 South, row A1 east, grave 7. ~s01, s02, s12

    Elizabeth's grave is part of a double family plot with a single memorial :
    Grave 7 contains William, Elizabeth, William's grandson Gordon Collin DOUGLAS (died 1905, aged 5 hours) and
               William's daughter, Gertrude Mary DENHAM (died 1906, aged 24 years)
    Grave 8 contains William's wife Mary (died 1922, aged 68 years), their grandson Gordon Colin BROWN (died 1907, aged 12 months),
               and their son Collin DOUGLAS (died 1944, aged 65 years) with his wife Ethel Maud DOUGLAS (died 1954, aged 72 years)

    when it sailed into Port Adelaide, South Australia.
    Elizabeth ROBERTSON was an assisted migrant on the same ship.

    Robert and Elizabeth probably married shortly after
    arriving in South Australia.

    Robert and Elizabeth had 10 children over a period of 23 years.
    All were born in Adelaide, South Australia.
    Robert and Elizabeth were together for almost 32 years.

    Robert DOUGLAS
    died on Friday, 20th January 1871
    in Adelaide, South Australia.
    Aged 67 years.

    Robert DOUGLAS was a sailor, a sailmaker and finally a tentmaker.
    Elizabeth DOUGLAS survived for another 32 years.

    Elizabeth DOUGLAS nee ROBERTSON
    died on Saturday 31st October 1903
    in Walkerville, Adelaide, South Australia.
    Aged 83 years.

    Robert DOUGLAS and Elizabeth ROBERTSON are my 2nd Great Grandparents.
    Robert and Elizabeth were survived by at least 3 of their children
    many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

    Their decendants have spread throughout Australia.
