First Generation in Australia

George RIDGWELL  was born about 1808 in Essex, England.

Ann Maria RUSH  was born about 1809 in England.

Emma JONES  was born about 1813, probably in England.

Maria WADE nee WEST  was born about 1821 in London, England.

George RIDGWELL married Ann Maria RUSH
on Tuesday 23rd September 1828
in Tolleshunt Major, Maldon, Essex, England.

George was aged about 20 years and Ann Maria was aged about 19 years.
George and Ann Maria had four children between 1831 and 1839 in Tolleshunt Major, Maldon, Essex, England.
Their children were John, George, James and Ann Maria.

George applied for free passage to South Australia on 25 May 1839.  The family migrated from London, England on Thursday 6th June 1839, on the sailing ship  PRINCE REGENT.  The voyage to South Australia took 15 weeks and 6 days.  They sailed into Holdfast Bay, on Wednesday 25th September 1839.

On arrival, the family lived in Emigration Square, Currie Street, Adelaide.  On 25th October 1839, just 1 month after their arrival, their oldest child, John RIDGWELL was drowned in the Torrens River.  John was aged 9 years.

George and Ann Maria had four more children, whilst living in South Australia.  Henry was born in 1841, William in 1844, Richard in 1846 and Elizabeth Sarah in 1847.  The family lived and worked on farms in the Adelaide area,  including Goodwood, Brown Hill Creek, Coromandel Valley and Upper Sturt.

George and Ann Maria had the following children :

1 M John RIDGWELL  was baptised on 3rd April 1831 in Tolleshunt Major, Maldon, Essex, England.
John died on 25th October 1839 by drowning in the Torrens River, in Adelaide, South Australia.
John was probably buried in West Terrace Cemetery.  John was aged 9 years.
2 M George RIDGWELL  was baptised on 9th June 1833 in Tolleshunt Major, Maldon, Essex, England.
3 M James RIDGWELL  was born on 28th December 1835 in Tolleshunt Major, Maldon, Essex, England.
4 F Ann Maria RIDGWELL  was baptised on 21st February 1839 in Tolleshunt Major, Maldon, Essex, England.
Ann Maria married   Robert COULTER in 1857 in Gawler, South Australia.
Ann Maria and Robert are my 2nd Great Grandparents.
5 M Henry RIDGWELL  was born on 18th October 1841 in Goodwood, Adelaide, South Australia.
6 M William RIDGWELL  was born on 3rd March 1844 in Brownhill Creek, Adelaide, South Australia.
7 M Richard RIDGWELL  was born on 5th January 1846 in Coromandel Valley, Adelaide, South Australia.
8 F Elizabeth Sarah RIDGWELL  was born on 29th November 1847 in Upper Sturt, Adelaide, South Australia.

Ann Maria RIDGWELL nee RUSH died  on Saturday 20th January 1849 in Halifax Street, Adelaide, South Australia.
Ann Maria was buried on Monday 22nd January 1849 in West Terrace Cemetery, Adelaide.  Ann Maria was aged 40 years.
Ann Maria's grave location is not recorded and not known.  Ann Maria may be buried with, or near to John, her first child.

George RIDGWELL became a widow,  aged about 41 years with 7 young children.
George and Ann Maria's surviving children were George aged about 15 years, James aged 13 years, Ann Maria aged about 9 years,
Henry aged 7 years, William aged 4 years, Richard aged 3 years and Elizabeth Sarah aged 1 year.

George RIDGWELL married Emma JONES
on Monday 24th June 1850
in Adelaide, South Australia.

They were married in the Independent Chapel, in Freeman Street.
George and Emma were both widows.  George was aged 37*(42) years and Emma was aged 37 years.

Emma RIDGWELL formerly JONES nee ......  probably died in, or near to Adelaide, South Australia.

George RIDGWELL became a widow again,  with 7 children, 5 boys and 2 girls, 3 aged less than 10 years.

Maria Caroline WEST  was born about 1821 in London, England.

Maria Caroline WEST married John Charles WADE
about 1847
in England.

Emily Maria WADE, their first child was born about 1848 in London, England.

The family migrated to South Australia about 1849.

Ellen WADE, their second child was born on 3rd March 1850 in Adelaide, South Australia.

Frederick WADE, their third child was born on 14th June 1852 in Adelaide, South Australia.

John Charles WADE  was a blacksmith.  John died in late 1851, or early 1852, probably in South Australia, before Frederick' birth.

Maria WADE became a widow  with 2 infant girls and expecting her third child.

George RIDGWELL married Maria Wade
on Friday 18th Febuary 1853
in Adelaide, South Australia.

They were married in the Trinity Church.  They were both widows.
Maria was aged 32 years, with 3 infant children.  George was aged 41* (45) years, with 3 infants and 4 teenagers.

Frederick WADE , Maria's youngest child probably died in infancy.
Frederick was listed as "dead" on his mother's 1901 death certificate.

Bessie RIDGWELL  seems to have been George and Maria's first child together.
Bessie probably died in infancy.  Bessie was listed as "dead" on her mother's 1901 death certificate.

George and Maria had 3 more children in South Australia, John, Jane and Charles.
The family lived and worked around Red Banks on the Gawler Plains.

George and Maria travelled to the Victorian Goldfields about 1861 with their large and extended family.

Edward George RIDGWELL  was born on 26th July 1862 in Pleasant Creek, Victoria.

George RIDGWELL paid District Road Board Rates No.60 (NAV 10 pounds) in 1862 in for a property at Quartz Reefs.
George was the licensee of the Newington Hotel, from 16th December 1881 till 8th February 1883 in on Darlington Road, Stawell.

George and Maria moved to Nhill.  George became a merchant in Nhill.
Several of their children operated businesses in Nhill or were selectors in the surrounding area.

George and Maria had / raised the following children :

9 F Emily Maria WADE  was born about 1848 in London, England.
Emily was Maria's child from her first marriage.
Emily as aged about 5 years, when Maria married George.
10 F Ellen WADE  was born on 3rd March 1850 in Adelaide, South Australia.
Ellen was Maria's child from her first marriage.
Ellen was aged about 3 years, when Maria married George.
11 M Frederick WADE  was born on 14th June 1852 in Adelaide, South Australia.
Frederick was Maria's child from her first marriage.
Frederick was aged about 8 months, when Maria married George.
12 F Bessie RIDGWELL  was probably born about 1854 in South Australia.
13 M John Frederick RIDGWELL  was bon on 11th May 1855 in Red Banks, Gawler, South Australia.
14 F Jane Louisa RIDGWELL  was born on 24th June 1857 in Gawler Plains, South Australia.
15 M Charles Alfred RIDGWELL  was born on 11th August 1859 in Red Banks, Gawler, South Australia.
16 M Edward George RIDGWELL  was born on 26th July 1862 in Pleasant Creek, Victoria.

George RIDGWELL  died on 25th March 1888 in Wakeham Street, Stawell, Victoria.
The cause of death was Fatty Degeneration of Heart, Uncertain Bronchitis.
George was staying with his youngest son, Edward George, after becoming ill on the way to Williamstown.
George was buried on 26th March 1888 in Pleasant Creek Cemetery. George was aged 80 years.

Maria RIDGWELL formerly WADE nee WEST  died on 15th August 1901 in Stawell, Victoria.
Maria was buried on 16th August 1901 in Pleasant Creek Cemetery.  Maria was aged 79 years.
Maria and George are buried together.  Their grave  is in section 6, grave # 2213.

Second Generation

Henry RIDGWELL  ( George )
Henry was born on 18th October 1841 in Goodwood, Adelaide, South Australia.
Henry was baptised on 28th November 1841 in the Trinity Church, Adelaide.
Henry seems to have travelled to the Victorian Goldfields about 1861, with the family.
Henry resided in the Stawell area for 55 years.  Henry never married.

Henry RIDGWELL  died on 15th May 1916 in the Stawell Hospital, Victoria.
Henry's cause of death was Senile Decay and Cystitis for the previous 6 months.
Henry was buried on 16th May 1916 in Pleasant Creek Cemetery.  Henry was aged 74 years.
His grave is #296 in Section 1.  The grave is unmarked and the exact location is unknown.
Henry is buried with his brother William, and his neice Florence.  His burial record indicates that his religion was Methodist..

 

Emily Maria WADE  ( Maria WADE )
Emily was born about 1848 in London, England.
Emily was aged about 5 years, when her mother married George RIDGWELL.
Emily married  William PEARDON in 1866 in Victoria.
William was born about 1837 in Devonshire, England.
Emily and William had the following children :

1 F Emily Jane PEARDON  was born in 1867 in Pleasant Creek, Victoria.
2 F Ellen PEARDON  was born in 1869 in Pleasant Creek, Victoria.
3 M William PEARDON  was born in 1871 in Pleasant Creek, Victoria. 4 M Richard Albert PEARDON  was born in 1876 in Stawell, Victoria.
5 M John Charles PEARDON  was born in 1878 in Pleasant Creek, Victoria.
6 F Alice Louisa PEARDON  was born in 1881 in Pleasant Creek, Victoria.

William PEARDON  died in 1883 in Victoria.  William was aged 46 years.

Emily married  William FARMER in 1888 in Victoria.  William was born in England.

 

Ellen WADE  ( Maria WADE )
Ellen was born on 3rd March 1850 in Adelaide, South Australia.
Ellen was aged about 3 years, when her mother married George RIDGWELL.
Ellen married  John HUNTER in 1867 in Stawell, Victoria.

Ellen HUNTER nee WADE  died in 1886 in Stawell, Victoria.

 

Frederick WADE  ( Maria WADE )
Frederick was born on 14th June 1852 in Adelaide, South Australia.
Frederick was born after his father died.
Frederick was aged about 8 months, when his mother married George RIDGWELL. ~s01, s02

Frederick WADE  probably died in infancy, in South Australia or Victoria.
Frederick was listed as "dead" on his mother's 1901 death certificate.
Frederick was incorrectly listed as George and Maria's first child on Maria's death certificate.

 

Bessie RIDGWELL  ( George )
Bessie was may have been born about 1854 in South Australia.

Bessie RIDGWELL  probably died in infancy, in South Australia or Victoria.
Bessie was listed as "dead" on her mother's 1901 death certificate.
