Preston "Press" Payne was listed on the A. T. W. Payne--Thomas Boyd substitute muster roll for Capt Goldman Bryson's Company of Union Volunteers as having been killed in action 3 Nov 1863. W. H. Clapp, special investigator, recorded on 17 Aug 1871 that Preston S. Payne "belonged to the CO and was killed at his own house after the CO was disbanded." Bryson's company was surprised and routed in all directions 27 Oct 1863 with Bryson himself killed the following day. Press Payne's brother John Payne was also killed in 1863. Later, another brother Benjamin Franklin Paine/Payne joined CO G, 3rd TN MTD INF REGT, USA.
A widow's pension claim was filed 24 Jul 1870 with the attorney listed as J. H. Kelso, who was not actually her attorney. Thomas G. Boyd of Sweetwater, TN was acting on her behalf and falsely using Kelso's name on many documents. Supposed justices of the peace executing the claim were M. F. Johnson, Larkin Brannon, and G. W. Payne. Acting as witnesses were supposedly M. F. Johnson, Malissa Doyle, A. T. W. Payne, and S. N. M. Bryson. Dependent children named were Sarah O. Payne b 3 Apr 1860 and John Payne b 19 Mar 1863.
Pension was granted 14 Mar 1871 at $8 monthly plus $2 for each child. Also, $249.40 backpay was mailed to Thomas G. Boyd, attorney at Sweetwater, TN; a $15 attorney fee was deducted from the widow's first check as well. This pension was suspended 19 Dec 1871 for unspecified reasons with no investigation undertaken subsequently.
