He filed a pension claim 4 Sep 1889 for service in CO D 3rd TN MTD INF REGT as a sgt. Residence was Concord and Bearden, Knox CO, TN. For 9 yrs after the war, he lived in Monroe CO, TN, followed by 12 yrs in Polk CO, TN. Then, he moved to Knox CO, TN where he resided at time of application. His pension began 14 Sep 1889 at $8 monthly. It was increased to $12 on 31 Dec 1904; to $15 on 21 Feb 1907; to $20 on 10 Dec 1909; to $21 on 8 Jun 1912; and to $30 on 10 Jun 1918.

Prior to his Union military service, he had enlisted in the Confederacy, CO A, 29th NC REGT, "Walker's CO", known as the "Cherokee Guards" and was mustered in as a sgt. At enlistment on 17 Jun 1861, he was recorded as a farmer aged 25 and resident of Cherokee CO, NC. On 13 Mar 1862, he received a medical discharge for "fever leg." His younger brother Cornelius Hibberts had also joined the Confederacy but in CO H of Thomas' NC Legion as a pvt. Cornelius was captured, held in camps as a prisoner of war, and died 14 Feb 1865 in prison camp at Point Lookout, MD.
