William R. Johnson, Sgt.

WILLIAM R. JOHNSON was a sergeant in Company G of the 3rd TN MTD INF REGT. He was born 21 Nov 1838 in Monroe Co, TN to Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Johnson. Mrs. Johnson was an Edmundson before marriage. William died 7 Mar 1923 in Limestone CO, AL and was buried in Cambridge Church Cemetery.

Following a skirmish with the enemy on 1 Nov 1864, he sustained an injury causing disabilility and a lameness in his left leg, hip, and arm.

He married Easter Vasser, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John C. Vasser, in Monroe CO, TN on 19 Nov 1868. She was born in 1847 and died in Limestone CO, AL on 18 Nov 1925. Easter's brothers, John and James Vasser, and her brothers-in-law, William Hooper and Thomas Mashbern, served with the 62nd Mounted Infantry in the CSA. Thomas Mashbern died in Camp Douglas, IL after being captured at Big Black River, MS.

By 1870, William and Easter Johnson had moved to Limestone CO, AL where they remained the rest of their lives. They reared the following six children:

Andrew J. Johnson b 30 Jan 1875 married Sarah Davis
John C. Box Johnson b 13 Jan 1877
Ervin Johnson b 10 Sep 1878 married Lizzie Cooley
William Robert Johnson b 10 Mar 1882.

In the 1910 census for Shoalford, Limestone CO, AL, William and Easter were listed as aged 71 and 61, respectively. There was a "UA" or Union Army notation made under the census column regarding Civil War service. Les Campbell is trying to locate the exact location of their graves in order to place a marker.
