William B. "Bill" Sutton filed a pension claim and gave testimony to Special Field Examiner L. S. Perkins of the Pension Bureau on 29 Dec 1909 near Diamond, AR. His testimony revealed that a cyclone had hit Hanging Dog Community in Cherokee CO, NC on 6 May 1866 blowing away his house and the family Bible which contained his date of birth; however, his half-brother Joseph L. McDowell, ten yrs his senior, had previously copied the Bible notations and had them at his residence in Tellico Plains, TN. This record is the source of his birthdate above. Bill Sutton had moved to AR from Cherokee CO, NC in 1892. Other records in pension claim show his death as 7 Oct 1938 at age 93.
In the John T. Rodgers' pension investigation, Special Agent T. D. Luke reported to the commission in Sept 1892 from Murphy, NC that he was unable to obtain testimony of William B. Sutton because Sutton had killed a Negro, broken out of the Murphy, NC jail, and was either hiding out or had fled the state. Special Field Examiner S. M. Arnell of the Pension Bureau reported on 7 Jul 1900 to the Commission regarding Enoch Voyles' pension claim that a witness, J. L. McDowell was not of good repute because he had "too many sons in the penitentiary."
Bill Sutton served first as a pvt in 29th NC REGT, Walker's Battalion, CSA from 17 Jun 1861 - 16 Sep 1862. Confederate muster-out rolls record his age as 15 upon date of discharge.
