John A. & Ann Burriss had 11 children in all. The pension file lists the following siblings: Eliza Jane, John, Abraham (who married Malinda Denton, dau of Alfred Denton and Dorcas Click), Isaac, Jacob, Washington, & Joseph.
Gideon Morgan Burriss was the namesake of Colonel Gideon Morgan, War of 1812 and father of Major (George Washington) Wash Morgan, Third Tennessee Infantry, Confederate Army. Major Wash Morgan's son was Gideon Morgan. In the pension file, Gideon Burriss says that in 1861 he ran away with a neighbor's boy, Gid Morgan, and together they went to VA and stayed four months and then came home. They stayed with Gid Morgan's father's regiment, Major Wash Morgan. He also stated that Charley Denton and a host of the Kirklands were in the company, including Bushwhacking John Kirkland.
Gideon was a Pvt, CO B, 3rd TN INF, Colonel John C. Vaughn's REGT, CSA and enlisted 22 May 1861 for one year. He was discharged 27 December 1861 on a Surgeon's Certificate of Disability of Captain William Parker's CO, age 18, light complexion, blue eyes, red hair, farmer, unfit for duty for 40 days near Centerville, VA suffering from chronic diarrhea and not capable for duty.
Before the war, he lived in the Burchfield Settlement on the Tellico River with his father and was nearer to Povo than he was to Ball Play, Monroe CO, TN.
He claimed disability in his Union service for injury to his nose and for rheumatism.
Gideon married Mary J. Swafford 10 Apr 1877 Polk CO, TN. Mary was born 12 Oct 1844 and died 29 Mar 1928, R.F.D. 5, Athens, McMinn CO, TN. She is buried in Wesleyanna Methodist Church Cemetery, State Road 30, McMinn CO, TN.
