Joshua Farmer and his family moved to Cherokee CO, NC around 1845. Between then and 1882, they moved between Cherokee CO and Monroe CO several times. In 1882 Joshua, Rebecca, their children, and their families, except John Nelson, all moved to Oklahoma. Joshua and Rebecca are buried in Newton CO, AR. At this time John and Margaret moved from Tellico Plains in Monroe CO to Unaka in Cherokee CO. John and Margaret had six children in Tellico Plains and five children in Unaka. John and Margaret are buried in the Unaka Cemetery.
It is said that during the war John saved the life of his friend, Bill Dockery, a Confederate soldier. Some Union soldiers were going to kill Bill, but John offered to capture him instead. John captured Bill, saving his life. However, Bill held a grudge against John for capturing him. Bill held his grudge for many years, but in 1897 John's daughter married Bill's son.
