ARTIFICIAL REFUGEE CAVE

The etching above was printed on p. 263 of J. S. Hurlburt's The History of the Rebellion in Bradley County, East Tennessee, first published in 1866. On the dedication page, Hurlburt wrote, "Enthusiastically dedicated to the Union People of Tennessee and their posterity." In the Introduction for the reprinting, John W. Cook wrote that the people of the area "so enraged by this publication went to the State Legislature to try and have ownership of this book made a crime! Unsuccessful at this attempt, every copy of the book that could be found by groups of vigilantes were brought to the courthouse lawn and burned. Of the one thousand copies originally printed, only twelve or so remain today in private collections and libraries."
