Pictured above is William H. "Uncle Bill" Hampton standing on the right. The taller man standing on the left in the photo is Forester A. "Saw" White, son of Aaron M. "Stark" White and wife Caroline "Aunt Callie" (Barnett) White. Saw White is pictured in another photo with Uncle Bill Hampton's son Cousin Ode Hampton. Judging from the background, they were probably logging that hill. Uncle Bill worked in his brother James Wesley "Bob" Hampton's sawmill at Liberty Hill, McMinn County, TN. Bob Hampton is my great-grandfather who used "Bob" merely for a nickname because he hated to be called "J - Dub." Various online family trees and other hastily copied websites have listed his name as "Robert" because they have no knowledge of him.
Written on the back of this old photo was, "Saw White [left] and Bill Hampton [right]. Bill Hampton shot Saw White in leg which eventually killed him. Bill Hampton was shot by Saw White in the back." Note, however, that Forrester White's TN death certificate states cause of his death as "chronic intersticial nephritis with high blood pressure as contributory."
Many, many thanks to Cousin Mary Lee Farmer for this and many other copies of old family photos! She has been a great help in finding and copying old pictures as well as getting identification for them and other helpful data.
