Died April 12, 1988*wife of my grandmother's first cousin and neighbor of my parentsMrs. Edith (Cardin) Hampton,* 83, of Route 4, Athens, died Tuesday at Athens Community Hospital.
A native of Monroe County, and resident of McMinn County for 60 years, she was a daughter of the late Luther and Fannie (Hawkins) Cardin. She was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Odis D. Hampton, on March 16, 1985, and a son, James Hampton. She was a member of West End Baptist Church.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Clara and Scott Melton; son and daughter-in-law, L. E. and Rosezella Hampton, all of Athens; brother, Humphrey Cardin of Mount Vernon; two sisters, Mrs. Beatrice Cronan of Manchester, and Mrs. Bessie Payne of Mount Vernon; 14 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 11 A. M. Thursday in the chapel of Laycock Funeral Home with the Revs. Edd Casteel and Herman Jordan officiating.
The family will receive friends today from 7 until 9 P. M. at the funeral home. Burial will be at Cedar Grove Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Brian Puett, Billy, Kenny, Mark, Junior, and Larry Hampton, Bobby and Jeff Melton.
