James C. Baker's Tombstone

Nancy Jane Baker's Tombstone

James C. and Nancy Jane Baker are my great-great-great-great-grandparents. Their tombstones are located in Prospect Methodist Church Cemetery and were photographed by my husband Stephen Ratledge. Although we have color snapshots, I have uploaded these black and white ones because they are easier to read.

A wisteria vine grew on Nancy Jane's tombstone and grave when we located it about 1981. My mother, who had a green thumb, took two small cuttings of the plant, wrapped them in wet paper towels, and later transplanted one into her yard and the other in mine. With Mama's special touch, this tiny wisteria flourished immediately. Now, twenty-two years later, it has spread more than half way across the fence in my front yard. Each spring, its beautiful, lusciously fragrant purple blossoms remind me of Nancy Jane Baker and my mother, her great-great-great-granddaughter. I suspect that Nancy Jane had a purple wisteria and probably loved it as much as I do.
