Rachel (Baker) Hues's Tombstone

photo taken by my husband Stephen Ratledge years ago
b 9 Feb 1824 [tombstone says 1844 but believed erroneous; census says 1836] NC d 18 Oct 1908 buried Shady Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, Monroe CO, TN

[NOTE: Someone obvioulsy hand-chiseled her death date later than this tombstone was first inscribed. My picture above provides a detailed view of this. They have also tried to change the birth year as well by chiseling over the original date. To me, this indicates that someone knew her inscription had errors. Her surname was probably spelled phonetically and so inscribed Hues but instead should be Hughes. For an account of Aunt Rachel (Baker) Hues's life, click this link and read my story "In the Shade of Starr Mountain."]
