Many, many thanks to Cousin Mike Cunningham of TX for providing this fantastic photo of his great-grandparents' home at Jalapa, Monroe CO, TN! This cabin is believed to have been built about the time Monroe County was established in 1819. If so, David Cunningham, "Crit" Cunningham's father, would have built it. David and Adeline (Caldwell) Cunningham* are listed as residents on the 1830 census of Monroe CO, TN with two young sons and probably lived in this cabin. Crit was not born until 1838. Originally, David would have made wooden shingles with a froe for the roofing.
