He enlisted as a volunteer with the Union Army in 1864 and served until the end of the Civil War. The 7th Regiment was organized at Athens and Nashville, Tennessee in August 1864. It was attached to the District of East Tennessee until March 1865, then attached to the 2nd Brigade, District of East Tennessee, Department of the Cumberland until July, 1865. Duty for the regiment was primarily at Nashville and Athens until March, 1865. Action was encountered at Athens, Tennessee on 28 January 1865, and then again near Philadelphia, Tennessee on 1 March 1865. Operations continured about Athens, Tennessee through 2 March 1865. The guard passed east of Athens, Tennessee in July. Soldiers were mustered out on 27 July 1865.
