Four Generations of the Roberts Family
(1898)
Pictured above, seated left to right are William Edward "Ed" or "Chief" Cline*, his wife Sarah Adeline (Roberts) Cline* (third generation Roberts), and in her lap is their oldest son William "Bill" or "Willie" Cline, born Mar. 12, 1898 (oldest of fourth generation Roberts descendants). Seated on Sarah's left is her father John Samuel Roberts** (second generation Roberts). Seated next is his wife Minerva "Nervy" Catherine (Wilson) Roberts** holding their baby Mira E. (Roberts) Liles born in Aug. 1897 (third generation Roberts). Standing between them is their son William "Willie" Isaac Roberts, (third generation Roberts). Standing on Minerva's left is her daughter Ossie (Roberts) Rider (third generation Roberts). Aunt Ossie helped me with information on the Roberts family. Seated next is Catherine (Gardner) Roberts***, wife of William Roberts*** (first generation Roberts), who is seated last. William and Catherine are the parents of John Samuel Roberts. Standing in a semi-circle behind their parents are John and Minerva (Wilson) Roberts' children, left to right as follows: Margaret "Mag" A. (Roberts) Stevenson, Edward "Ed" W. Roberts, and Ida M. (Roberts) McCracken (all third generation Roberts). In the background is the old home place of the Roberts family in Mt. Vernon, Monroe CO, TN.
The original photo was given my mother by her grandfather Ed or "Chief" Cline*, pictured above, after his wife's death on Aug. 19, 1955. He died Nov. 7, 1955 -- less than three months following the death of his beloved wife, Sarah, Granny Cline*. Our whole family believed his death was due more to heartbreak from her loss than from his own ill health. Theirs was a true love story spanning a lifetime and woven with devotion to each other and to family. Everyone in the Knobs loved Sarah (Roberts) Cline, for no gentler, kinder, or quieter woman lived in those hills. Although I was only seven at the time, I still recall their deaths vividly and weep as I type these words.
The photo and all information above was given me by my mother Beulah (Cline) Nipper.
