Dear Cousin
I was very much pleased to hear from you and I have ? you a little note in return    Today is my birthday    I am 12 years old today and people tell me I grow so very tall    mother says she should be glad if I did not grow quite so fast    I am obliged to you for the picture you sent me and I have sent a little present in return    it was only 1 penny and that was very cheap    give my love to aunt and uncle and all my cousins and    uncle Tom and tell him I ? like to see him in his soldier dress but I cannot remember his going out but I think I can just remember your going out    I send my love to you    I wonder which grows the fastest me or Henry    I should like to see you very much    perhaps we shall some day    such a thing might happen    I gave ? Alfred the cannon and ? and he was very much pleased with it    I dare say you are getting quite a woman now    I should just like to come over and spend an evening with you    I should enjoy it very much and now I must conclude with my kind love to you

EDITOR'S NOTES:

Matilda Dann (b. April 7, 1850) was a first cousin of Fannie (Saunders) Austin who remained in England. She was the daughter of Aunt F. Dann whose letter also appears in this collection. This letter was written the same day that Matilda's and Fannie's uncle, Thomas Huntley, Co. F, 26th New York Volunteers also wrote a letter to Fannie. That letter written from Fort Lyon, Virginia also appears in this collection.
