Sunrise lights up the southern flank of Mount Rainer near Seattle, Washington

Sunrise lights up the southern flank of Mount Rainer, as seen from our Horizon Air flight as we left Seattle, Washington heading to Fresno, California in February 2005. We flew above clouds for most of the flight.

Newberry National Volcanic Monument in the Deschutes National Forest in Oregon, as seen from our Horizon Air flight.

Snow dusts this ancient volcano called Newberry Crater. Newberry is still both seismically and geothermally active. On the left is (top to bottom) East Lake, cauldera crater and Paulina Lake. This was once a large lake like Crater Lake, but now the lakes are separated by a flow of lava and pumice. In the middle is the road going back to East lake. On the right, about the middle of the picture, covered in snow is the "Big Obsidian Flow," at 1,300 years old it is the most recent volcanic eruption in Oregon, made up of black glass lava. Below that, in the bottom right corner of the picture is Paulina Peak, the highest point in the Monument at 7,985 feet with a great view.
