Thomas Edward Lauerman, 79, passed away peacefully on December 7, 2003, at Nazareth House, surrounded by his children, family and friends. Tom was born in Hammond, Indiana on April 24, 1924. Before his senior year in high school his family moved to Youngstown, Ohio. Upon graduation he attended the University of Norte Dame. He moved to San Diego in the early 1950s and worked as a buyer in the aerospace industry. In 1958, he met his future wife, Ruth Beatrice Zak M.D. at a Friday Club gathering and they married the following year. Tom ' s life brought him many challenges, but also many rewards. While raising his three children in San Diego he opened up his home to kids who were less fortunate or needed a place to stay. The kids in the neighborhood always knew they could depend on Mr. Lau and in his later years he relied on their friendships in return. One of his greatest memories was the trip he took in 1999 to the Vatican where, sitting in the front row, he was able to attend a mass with the Pope. His priorities were his faith, his family and Notre Dame. He called himself "Luck Lauerman", but we were the lucky ones. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. Tom was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Beatrice Zak-Lauerman M.D. He will be truly missed by his son Thomas Edward Lauerman II and his wife Paula of Oregon, daughter Bettyann Bernhardt and her husband Paul and their children Sara Ann and Joseph Thomas, of San Diego and son Christopher Charles Lauerman and his wife Gina Murphy and their children Emily Ann and Zak Murphy; brothers James Lauerman, Indiana, David Lauerman, New York, and sister Mary Ballman, El Cajon. A Vigil will be held at Our Lady of Grace, 2766 Navajo Rd., El Cajon, Ca 92020 at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 11, 2003. A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday at Our Lady of Grace at 10:30 a.m. followed by graveside services at Holy Cross Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Sisters of Nazareth House, 6333 Rancho Mission Road, San Diego, Ca 92108.

Lauerman, Vet Mail Carrier, Dies at 76 A well-known postal carrier, Michael Lauerman, 76, of 5 Sibley St. Hammond, who delivered parcels in a horse and buggy in Hammond during the early part of the century, died yesterday in St. Margaret hospital. Lauerman retired from the postal service in July, 1935, after 32 years service. Lauerman delivered mail on Hammond's northside during the first years of his career, and then on Hohman Ave. Operated General Store Before joining the postal service in 1903, he operated a general store on Hihman Ave. He resided in Hammond for over 50 years, and was well-known in the communities of St. John, Cook and Crown Point. Funeral services will be conducted at 8:30 a.m. Friday in the Burns' Funeral home and at 9 a.m. in St. Joseph church. His son, Rev. Lucian Lauerman of the Catholic University of Washington, D.C. will officiate at requiliem high mass. Burial will be in St. Joseph cemetery, Hammond. The body may be viewed after 6 p.m. tonight at the Burns' chapel. The retired postal employe(e) is survived by three sons, Frank of Youngstown, O.; Rev. Lauerman, and Joseph of Santa Clara, Calif.; three daughters, Mrs. Fern Clover and Mrs. Florence Filas, both of Calumet City, and Mary Lauerman of Washington, D.C.; a brother John of Cook, 13 grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He was a member of Baumgartner court of Catholic Order of Foresters, Holy Name Society of St. Joseph church, and a member of the Postal Employe(e)s Assn. Lauerman, aged 51 years, mother of six children, passed away this morning at her home 5 Sibley street, after an illness since Monday when she suffered a stroke of paralysis. She has been a resident of Hammond since 1892 when she came here from Cedar Lake where she taught in the schools. She is survived by six children: Frank, Fern, Lucien, Florance and Joseph and her husband Michael E., parcel post employe at the Hammond postoffice. Mrs. Lauerman is survived also by her mother, three sisters, four brothers, and two grand children. |

Lauerman, of East Carroll street, are happy to announce the arrival of a little daughter, born to them at St. Margaret's hospital on Tuesday, February 3rd. The little girl will be named Jean Ann. Mrs. Lauerman will be remembered as Miss Evelyn Solon before her marriage. Mother and daughter are both well. Note: This little girl died February 5, 1925 and was buried in St. Joseph Cemetery, Hammond, Indiana. Found this birth announcement while searching for her obituary. No obituary could be found. Had she lived, Jean Ann Lauerman would have been my aunt. |

Lauerman, an Airman 1c, was stationed at Keesler Air Force Base. He was a 1950 graduate of Hammond Technical High School and a member of the Moose Lodge and of All Saints Church in Hammond. Lucian Leo - age 89 a Catholic Priest and social worker who had worked for more than 20 years on the social work faculty at Catholic University, died of cancer April 11, 1989, in Hyattsville, Maryland where he lived since 1957. Father Lou was a native of Hammond, Indiana and said his first Mass at St. Joseph Church, Hammond. He attended St. Mary Seminary in Cincinatti, Ohio and St. Paul Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota. Graduated from Loyola University in Chicago. Ordained to the Priesthood June 14, 1924, St. Marys Cathedral, Portland, Oregon. In early 1930 he attended Columbia University, New York. In 1935 he went to Washington D.C., studied social work and received his Masters Degree at Catholic University. In 1937, became Director of the National Catholic School of Social Service and acting Dean of Catholic University School of Social Work, later merged two schools. He received his Doctorate in Social Work from Catholic University in 1943. Stayed on the faculty as a teacher and director of field work and research until his retirement in 1965. In June 1974 he returned to Hammond to Celebrate his 50th anniversary as a Priest at a Jubilee Mass, St. Joseph Church. Survivors: three sisters, Fern Clover of Michigan City, Florence Filas of Crown Point and Marie Lauermann of Washington, D.C.; numerous nieces and nephews. Her survivors, all of whom called her Tante, include the children of her brother Frank James Lauerman of Crown Point, Indiana, Thomas Lauerman of San Diego, California, Mary Ballman of San Diego, David Lauerman of Buffalo, New York and Jane Miller of Battle Creek, Michigan; the children of her sister, Fern Clover, Rosemary Austgen of Kalamazoo, Michigan, Lois Cold of Chicago, Jack Clover of Valparaiso, Indiana and Karyl Pawlowski, daughter of Marie's sister Florence Filas and Laura Anderson, Robert Trusedale and Michael Lauerman, all of Campbell, California; children of her brother, Joseph; there are also 26 grand nieces and nephews and at least 34 great-grand nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held at the Burns-Kish Funeral Home, 5840 Hohman Avenue, Hammond on Sunday 2 to 4 pm. Funeral services Monday, August 5, 1996 at 9:30 a.m. with a 10 a.m. Mass at St. Joseph Church in Hammond with Father Roy Beeching officiating. Interment, St. Joseph Cemetery. Mrs.(sic) Lauerman was born in Hammond, she was the last surviving sibling of her generation; graduated from St. Xavier's College in Chicago; and subsequently studied at the Central School of Dramatic Art in London and University of Friebourg in Switzerland; after college in Chicago and 6 years on the New York stage, Mrs.(sic) Lauerman taught speech and drama at Lamoyne College in Memphis, Tennessee before beginning her career at the Department of Justice in 1941. She left Washington in 1944 to serve for 2 years as a lieutenant in the Coast Guard (SPARS) after which she began her long career as a writer on cultural affairs at USIA; she had remained professionally active as a member of the American New Womans Club, Kappa Gamma Phi, USIA alumni and Washington Drama Society. |
