STROKE PROVES FATAL TO MRS. SUSAN SOLON Wednesday, Jan. 27, 1937 Front Page (Submitted by Kay Scott) A Paralytic stroke suffered yesterday at 2:30 p.m. in her home at 1038 Bauer Street proved fatal to Mrs. Susan Solon, 62, Hammond resident for 25 years. Surviving are her husband, Joseph; sons, Duane, Bud, Paul and Jerome, all of Hammond; daughters, Mrs. Clarence Volkman of Hammond, Mrs. H.A. Steele of Fairmont, W. Va., and Mrs. V. J. Lauerman of Fowler, Ind.; sisters, Mrs. H. V. Grant of Bloomington, Ind and Mrs. George L. Bigelow of Pontiac, Mich., and brother, J. H. Andrews of Gridley, ILL. Funeral services will be held Friday at 9 a.m. from All Saints' church in Hammond. The Rev. E. J. Mungovan will officiate and burial will be in Calvary cemetery, Gary. (Submitted by Karen Beidelman) Funeral services for Joseph "Bud" Solon, 44, of 5630 Claude Av., Hammond, who died in St. Margaret Hospital Friday night after being ill of pneumonia for a week, will be held tomorrow morning. Brief services will be held in the Dalton Funeral Home at 8:30 o'clock and at 9 o'clock in All Saints Church with Msgr. Edward Mungovan officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Gary. Mr. Solon was a prominent Hammond sportsman. In 1930-31 he sponsored the Solon Athletic Club of Hammond and organized and directed the Solon Club basketball team, composed of Fritz Thornton, Art Irwin, Bill Friedhoff, Gabe Overman, Dick Mettler, Raus Purbaugh and "Curly" O'Connor. Surviving are the widow, Edna; two sons, James and Robert; a daughter, Lovell Donna; his father, Joseph Solon of Calumet City; three brothers, Paul, Jerry and Duane, all of Hammond, and three sisters, Mrs. Guy Stell of Detroit, Mrs. V. Hammond after a week's illness from pneumonia. Vincent Solon was born April 28, 1902 at Graymont, Illinois, the son of Joseph and Elizabeth (Andrews) Solon. In 1903, the family moved to Hamlet, Indiana and later to Hammond. He was preceded in death by his mother January 26, 1937. His wife and three children survive. Also surviving are his father, Joseph Solon; three brothers Duane, Paul and Jerome Solon, all of Hammond; three sisters, Mrs. Helen Steele, Detroit, Michigan, Mrs. Evelyn Lauerman, Fowler, Indiana and Mrs. Catherine Volkman, Hammond, Indiana. The deceased was a nephew of Mrs. George L. Bigelow, this city.
Thomas SOLON Friday, May 11, 1906 (page 1, column 3) The body of Thomas Solon, who died at St. Joseph's hospital in Joliet, Tuesday, was brought here for burial, Thursday morning. The services were held at St. Mary's church. Mr. Solon used to live in Owego township. He for some years lived in Pontiac until his health failed and he went to the hospital. His family live in Odell. He leaves a wife, four daughters and one son.
Florence SOLON Friday, November 9, 1906 (page 1, column 1) The funeral of Miss Florence Solon took place at Odell last Saturday. A large number from this city, also some from Flanagan and Lexington, were in attendance.
