O’Neals who fought in the War of 1812

Custus O’Neal

Given the uniqueness of the name, I strongly believe that the Custus O’Neal listed in the 1812 soldier index is the same Custus O’Neal that I have researched and documented in my “Davidson and Wilson Co, TN O'Neal Families” Tree, currently posted in the Family Tree section of Rootsweb.

Custus can be found in the 1820 census of Wilson County, TN near the city of Lebanon, listed as Custis O’Neil.   In the 1830 Census, Custus is also in Wilson County, TN.

The strongest evidence for Custus being a son of  John O’Neal is an affidavit submitted in 1853 by a Custus O’Neal on behalf of Thomas Brooks.  In this

affidavit, Custus O’Neal swears that his father, John, served with Thomas Brooks in the Revolutionary War.    This affidavit was submitted to a clerk of the court

from Decatur County, TN in an attempt to assist Thomas Brooks with obtaining his Revolutionary War Pension.
