O’Neals who fought in the War of 1812
Isam O’Neal
It appears that the Isam O’Neal listed in the 1812 soldier index is possibly a brother to Custus O’Neal that I have researched and documented in my “Davidson and Wilson Co, TN O'Neal Families” Tree, currently posted in the Family Tree section of Rootsweb.
Isom is not found in the 1820 or 1830 census. It seems likely that this Isam O’Neal was killed in the Battle of Horshoe Bend and was buried at Ft. Williams, where his body was taken after the battle. The headstones of those buried at Ft. Williams were later moved, and Isom’s headstone is now located in a cemetery near Talladega County, Alabama.
For more information on this battle and evidence that Isom O’Neal is buried in the “Indian War of 1812 cemetery”, see this link on the TN Gen Web Project Page.
There is also an FTP site listing this cemetery at Ft. Williams Cemetery
