The entirety of the Military File in the National Archives for this John O’Neal consists of two small index cards with a little bit of data about John O’Neals’ service in the War of 1812.   The pertinent details from those two cards are listed here:

 

·         John was a private in Atkinson’s Regiment

·         His unit was a part of the North Carolina Militia

·         The unit itself was based in Orange County, NC

·         Capt David Tate commanded the Infrantry unit that John O’Neal served in

·         Colonel Richard Atkinson oversaw the Regiment

·         From July 31 to August 3rd, 1813, John traveled 1.5 Miles

·         In that time, he recorded 4 days of service and was given 4 rations

·         For that timeframe he was paid 26 2/3rd cents per day for a total of $1.60 and 2/3rd cent
