The Pride of the Yarra had embarked from Port Chalmers with 50 passengers for Dunedin - many had just arrived from London on board the Matoaka, and others on board had arrived from Invercargill on board the William Miskin. The night was cold an foggy and many of the passengers took shelter in the cabin.

The Favourite was a powerful paddle steamer and was seen to be headed straight for the Pride of the Yarra which then altered course immediately. The two ships collided violently and the Pride of the Yarra sunk quickly.

Amongst the deaths was the Reverend Thomas Hewitt CAMPBELL, who with his wife, five children and their two servants [Fanny FINCH and Sarah ROBERTS] had just arrived on the Matoaka from England. Rev. Campbell was to take up the position of rector at the Otago Boy's High School. The family and their servants are buried together at the Southern Cemetery in Dunedin.
