JOHNSON (Golden Wedding) Mr and Mrs Ben B Johnson of Coromandel celebrated their golden wedding last week. Mr Johnson was born near Belfast, Ireland in 1845. He came to New Zealand in 1862 and after a few months in business joined Colonel Nixon's Defence Force and took part in seven engagements in the Maori War. After 30 years residence in Hawke's Bay, he went to Coromandel during the great boom and has resided there ever since. Mrs Johnson was born at Bathurst, New South Wales in 1847. She came to new Zealand with her parents when an infant. Her father was barrack master and he was drafted to the Bay of Islands just after the Hone Heke War. Three daughters of Mr and Mrs Johnson were present at their parent's golden wedding namely Mrs J Tanner of Tauranga, Mrs R Skeet, Napier and Miss Ethel Johnson who resides with her parents ... JOHNSON - ALLEN A quite wedding was solemnised at the Methodist Church yesterday morning when the Rev. OLIVER (GOLDEN WEDDING) At Bethlehem, on the last day of the old year, a large number of relatives and friends met at the residence of Mr J. W. Oliver to celebrate the golden wedding of Mr and Mrs Charles Oliver. Fifty years ago they were married in New Plymouth in the year 1868 by the Rev. C. Waters. Tbeir parents came out together to New Zealand in the ship Amelia Thompson ia the year 1844. The two families settled in the Taranaki district and there Mr and Mrs Oliver were born and lived until about nine years ago when they moved to the Bay of Plenty, their present home. They have family of four sons and three daughters living, twenty-five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Mr Oliver is the youngest son of the late Mr James Oliver and was born in the year 1843. Mrs Oliver is the only daughter of the late Mr W Allen all of Taranaki. Their youngest son, Harold is now in France, serving his King and country, and some of their grandsons have done their share in winning the war. Mr Oliver is one of the few remaining veterans of the Maori War, and he is the holder of the Maori War medal and also possesses the Veteran's Medal. Corporal Charles Oliver enlisted at the early age of 17 and served in the war for nearly 7 years, passing through many exciting experiences during that time. At the close of the war he took up bush land in the Mangorei district, near New Plymouth, and here they carved out a home. Mr and Mrs Oliver belong to the sturdy pioneer settlers of the early days of New Zealand, who helped to build this Dominion of the Southern Seas. The happy gathering was concluded by many congratulations and good wishes by those present, and telegrams from others, the singing of a Christmas hymn and the National Anthem.
