GROSE OF TREGONY, CORNWALL, ENGLAND TO LAMBETH AND KENNINGTON, SURREY, ENGLAND
The earliest GROSE I can claim is Samuel GROSE, born 1664 at St Enoder, Cornwall. His great great grandson Samuel GROSE was a carpenter in Tregony in Cornwall and then moved to Lambeth/Kennington, in Surrey in the early 1840s. Samuel married Mary TRESISE (TRESIZE) in 1822 and the couple had seven children.
Ann GROSE born c1826 Tregony, was at home in Tregony in 1841 but was not with the family in Lambeth by the 1851 census.
Eliza GROSE born 1827 Tregony married John Taylor OLVER in Lambeth in 1846. Somewhere around 1857 the family moved to Erie County, New York. Eliza and John had eight children.
Samuel GROSE born c1829 Tregony became a plumber in Lambeth and died unmarried in 1870.
Mary GROSE born c1831 Tregony married Edwin DYER. In the 1851 census Mary is listed as a Tambour Worker, which was an embroiderer. Edwin and Mary had four known children and lived in Kennington, around the corner from her sister Keturah JOHNSON.
Keturah GROSE born c1835 Tregony. *
James Tresise GROSE born 1836 Tregony. In the 1851 census James was living with his parents in Broad Street, Lambeth where he was a potters boy. The Royal Dolton factory was right across the street so it is assumed this is where he worked. Nothing more is known about James.
Joseph Tresise GROSE born 1840 Tregony. He was a scholar aged 3? in the 1851 census but nothing more is known on Joseph.
* Keturah was named for one of the wives of biblical Abraham. She married Alfred HILL in 1858 in Kennington and they had one son Alfred Samuel HILL in 1859. At the time of their marriage Alfred and Keturah were both living very close to the Oval Cricket Ground in Vauxhall. It appears Alfred died around 1860 and Keturah then married John JOHNSON, a whip maker of Rusholme, Manchester. He was a widower and 28 years older than she was. John and Keturah had two sons and two daughters, all born in Kennington, Lambeth R/D.
Henry Charles Johnson born 1869
Keturah Johnson born 1871
Clara Johnson born 1874. Married William George WARD
Frank Johnson born 1878
The area that they lived in Kennington (very near Kennington Park) was bombed during World War Two and is now the home to a high rise council estate.
Thanks to the on-line census on Ancestry.co.uk and a very good friend I have been able to find out more on John Johnson. In the 1851 census he was living at 17 Doris Street with his wife Mary aged 47 born Blackbridge, Surrey and 5 children;
John Johnson born 1833 Lambeth - Occupation Clicker
Anne Henrietta Johnson born 1838 Birmingham
Richard Johnson born 1841 Lambeth
Maria born Johnson 1843 Lambeth
Ellen born Johnson 1845 Lambeth
In the 1861 census John and Mary are still living at 17 Doris Street with Richard (Solicitors General Clerk), Maria (Envelope stamper) and Ellen (Milliner).
At 16 Doris Street, Samuel and Mary Grose are living with their daughter Kate Hill (Keturah) and her son Alfred as well as Samuel Grose. It was interesting to see Keturah now called Kate as in other records including both her marriages she is called Keturah.
