Where did William come from and why the double-barrelled name? After almost 20 years of research a chance comment by someone at the Leicestershire Archives led to the Bishops Transcripts for Tur Langton where he appears as William PUTTERILL son of William PUTTERILL and Catherine nee LEWIN. William had six sisters so he possibly took both surnames to stop the LEWIN name dying out!

With the advent of on-line census searching thanks to Ancestry.co.uk and a very good friend we may have found William and Harriet in the 1851 census.

PUTTERILL is an English metonymic occupation name for someone responsible for keeping horses or nickname for a frisky high-spirited person. "Pullus-young animal". A family called POUTREL or POWDRILL held the Manor of Thrumpton Nottingham from the time of the Doomsday Book until 1604 when it was confiscated in view of the family's well-known Catholic sympathies. Members of the family then moved to West Hallan, Derby. But the direct line died out in 1666. The name had also spread in Leicestershire and Lincolnshire by the early 14th century and is still found mainly in this region. (Hank & Hodges Surname Dictionary.)

In November 2016 I received an email from a DNA match cousin, Anne in Lincolnshire.  These are her findings on the Lewin Putterill's.
