MORGAN OF USK, MONMOUTHSHIRE, ENGLAND/WALES
John MORGAN was baptised on the 12 September 1802 in Trelleck, Monmouthshire, son of John MORGAN and Mary. On the 1 August 1835 John married Mary JAMES at Trevethin.
John was a timber merchant and also publican of the Royal Oak in Usk. The Royal Oak is still standing and has a plaque on the wall as follows; Edward John Trelawny 1792-1881. Author, adventurer, friend of Shelley and Byron. He was in Usk for 12 years. He lived in this house built 1839 before himself building Twyn Bell and later Cefnila.
John and Mary had eight children;
Mary born 1835 at Llangeview, near Usk. She married George ANTHONY and had a daughter, Ellen Mary ANTHONY in 1860 in Usk. Mary died on the 30 March 1861 aged 25 years and is buried in the Usk churchyard with her parents.
Catherine born 1837 at Llangeview. She married George EDMUNDS and they had two known children, George born 1868 and Frederick J born in 1873. Catherine died on the 6 December 1902 and is buried in the Usk churchyard.
Sarah Stewart born 1838 at Llangeview. She married John Charles WARD on the 15 September 1860 at the parish church, Monmouth. They had seven children: John Henry born 1862, Kate Annie 1863, Frances Eliza 1865, John Charles Morgan 1867, William George 1868, Sarah Stewart 1870, James Henry 1875. Sarah died on the 17 March 1914 at the Powis Almshouses in Chepstow and is buried in the Usk churchyard.
John born 1840 at Llangeview. John ran the timber business with his father and later became publican at the Castle Hotel in Usk. He married Mary Ann MORGAN and they had eight children: Ellen, Ann, Kate, Laura, Frances, Cissie, John Charles and Frank. John died 6 August 1884 and is buried in the Usk churchyard.
Ann(e) born 1841 at Llangeview. Nothing more is known of her except that she was alive at the death of her father in 1875.
Charles born 1843 at Llangeview. Charles worked with his father and brother in the timber business. He died unmarried on the 4 December 1871 and is buried in the Usk churchyard.
George born 1844 at Llangeview. Nothing more is known of George except that he was alive at the death of his father in 1875.
Frances born 1846 at Llangeview. She married ? STOCKHAM and nothing more is known of her. STOCKHAM appears to be a fairly rare name in Britain. She was alive at the death of her father in 1875.
John MORGAN died on the 21 October 1875 and Mary died on the 27 May 1875 both at Usk.
They are buried together in the Usk churchyard.
A WARD family story is that Sarah Stewart MORGAN was descended from King Charles II. It is said that King Charles II, who reigned from 1660 to 1685, had perhaps as many as 150 illegitimate off-spring. We can certainly trace back to a Stuart who would have been born around the late 1600s and possibly in Monmouthshire. Tree as follows;
