McQUARRIE (McWHARRIE) OF NEW CUMNOCK, SORN and ENVIRONS, AYRSHIRE, SCOTLAND

McQUARRIE/McWHARRIE OF NEW CUMNOCK, SORN and ENVIRONS, AYRSHIRE, SCOTLAND

With the help of Howard Geddes (of England), we have been able to trace the McQUARRIE (also spelt McWHARRIE) family to a John McQUARRIE who married Catherine CAMPBELL. Both MACQUARRIE and CAMPBELL are Argyllshire surnames but it is unsure where John and Catherine originate.

It is known that they had three children;

Robert — was born c1773 in New Cumnock, Ayrshire and married Hannah STEVENSON. They had nine children born in either Sorn or New Cumnock.

Allan — was born c1777 in Sorn, Ayrshire and married Margaret CLARK. They had seven children all born in Sorn. Note the similarity with the names above.

Flora — was born c1780 Cumnock, Ayrshire. She died unmarried in 1867 in Sorn.

* Nothing more is known of our Lauchlan but it would be interesting to know who he was named for. It would be nice if it was for Lachlan MACQUARIE who was born in 1762 on the Island of Ulva, Argyllshire. He went on to become one of Australias favourite governors and is remembered in Macquarie Street in Sydney, as well as the Macquarie Bank. His wife Elizabeth, is remembered by "Mrs Macquaries Chair" which gives a wonderful view of Sydney Harbour. Flora MACQUARRIE is also a popular name in Argyllshire.
