SAUNDERS OF CLAYDON, OXFORDSHIRE, ENGLAND TO MOUNT ROSKILL, AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND
Thomas Wells SAUNDERS was born around 1810 in Wappenham, Northamptonshire. HE married Elizabeth WHETTON and they had three (known) sons;
William born 1835 Wappenham, Northamptonshire
John born 1838 Claydon, Oxfordshire
Samuel born 1844 Claydon, Oxfordshire
John married Mary HALIDAY (HOLIDAY) in 1859 at Culworth, Northamptonshire. Their eight children, six sons and two daughters were all born there. In 1875 the family came to New Zealand on the ALUMBAGH and settled in Mount Roskill, Auckland. Their eldest son Samuel did not sail with them to New Zealand and arrived sometime between the 1881 UK census and marrying in New Zealand in 1919. It is also thought that the above Samuel (born 1844) also came to New Zealand thought this has yet to be proved.
Samuel born 1859. Married Elizabeth Victoria SLIGO FULLER. No issue. Gardener. Lived Waihi.
William Edward born 1860. Married Ellen Jane KIBBLEWHITE. One son, two daughters. Had a Sash & Door Factory, Petone, Wellington. No living issue.
Ann Elizabeth born 1863. Married widower William Row BRIDGMAN. One son. Lived Mount Eden, Auckland. No living issue
John Thomas born 1865. Married Helen (Nellie) WRIGHT of Pokeno. Two sons, five daughters. Farmed Ambury Point, Mangere, Auckland then moved to Hawera, Taranaki around 1900. See below.
Caleb (Charles) born 1867. Married Mary Elizabeth BURNAND of Auckland. Lived Kuaotuna, Coromandel (Kauri Timber Co) and later Auckland. Four sons, one daughter
Frederick born 1869. Salvation Army Officer. Married fellow officer Maria RIX of Little Akaloa, Banks Peninsula. They moved to Australia pre 1914. Three sons — two served with the AIF in World War One.
Ellen born 1871. Married Alfred Austral Butt PIESSE, accountant. They lived in Grey Lynn, Auckland. Four sons, one daughter
Walter born 1874. Married Emma Jane BURNAND, sister of Mary. They lived in Grey Lynn, Auckland. Walter worked for the Kauri Timber Company. Four sons, two daughters
John and Mary are buried at St Andrews Church, Epsom, Auckland.
John Thomas SAUNDERS married Helen WRIGHT at Pokeno, south of Auckland in 1893. John was manager of the Ambury Point farm at Mangere. Their older children can remember watching the sailing ships coming up the Manakau Harbour to Onehunga wharf. Thomas used to row the cream cans over to the factory at Onehunga. Around 1900 the family moved to Hawera, South Taranaki where they bought a farm at Turuturu Road. The family was:
Mary Holiday (Holly) born 1894. Married Thomas BARKLA. One daughter
Maggie Dean born 1895. Married John Walker ALEXANDER. Farmed at Grant Road and Ararata, Hawera. One son (died as infant), three daughters
Walter Robert born 1897. Served with NZEF during World War One. Married Mary CARR. Two sons
Edna Bessie born 1898. Married Charles Cleverley TARRANT. One daughter. Farmed at Waverley.
Ida Helen born 1899. Married William ALEXANDER (brother of John Walker). Farmed at Dalziel Road, Hawera. One son, four daughters.
Alma Mabel born 1905. Married Samuel PERCY. One son, one daughter
Arnold John born 1907. Married Margery KIVELL. One son. Electrical contractor. Lived Dargaville
