SHAND OF ST ANDREWS-LHANBRYDE, MORAYSHIRE, AND EDINBURGH, MIDLOTHIAN, SCOTLAND
I am the list administrator for the SHAND Mailing List on Rootsweb as the name SHAND appears on both my husband and my lines.
Unfortunately I have a brick wall with my William SHAND who married Isabella DUNCAN, sometime around 1832, probably in the Urquhart, St Andrews-Lhanbryde area of Morayshire, Scotland. William died on the 26 October 1839 aged 29 years and is buried in the Urquhart Kirkyard, Morayshire.
As William died before both the 1851 census (which could at least of told me where he was born) and civil registration in Scotland in 1855, (His death certificate may have given me his parents) I have been unable to find a possible birth entry for him. Also a marriage entry for a William SHAND to an Isabella DUNCAN has not been found.
Isabella was born in St Andrews-Lhanbryde in 1810, the daughter of John DUNCAN and Margaret COOK and died at Longhill, Urquhart in 1892. William and Isabella had four sons;
James born 1833 St Andrews-Lhanbryde — was on the 1851 census as an unmarried agricultural labourer. Nothing more is known of James.
Alexander born 1835 St Andrews-Lhanbryde — married Isobella DAVIDSON in 1862. They had five known children — Alexander, Ann, Isabella, James Davidson and Peter Watson. Alexander died in 1914 in Urquhart.
George born 1837 St Andrews-Lhanbryde — married Helen BLACK (of Knackando, Morayshire) in 1863 in Edinburgh. They had two daughters and two sons (see below). George died in 1878 in Leith, Edinburgh.
William born 1839 St Andrews-Lhanbryde was a witness to his brother Georges wedding in Edinburgh in 1863. In the 1861 census he was an unmarried mason living in Urquhart. Nothing more is known of William.
George SHAND who married Helen BLACK in Edinburgh in 1863 had two daughters and two sons:
Isabella Duncan born 1864. Married James Thomas AUDAS. One known daughter. Died 1945 Edinburgh. (AUDAS is possibly the rarest name in Scotland with 3 entries in the Scottish records from 1855 to 2003. There is an AUDAS mailing list on Rootsweb.)
George born 1866. Married Isabella McBEATH. Gas commissioner of Edinburgh. Two sons. Died 1896 Edinburgh.
William born 1869. Married Annie Pearson JOHNSTONE. Insurance accountant. One daughter. Died 1935 Edinburgh.
Helen born 1873. Died 1885 Edinburgh aged twelve years
