WEBSTER OF MAINS OF INVERAMSAY, INVERURIE, ABERDEENSHIRE, SCOTLAND

James WEBSTER (c1788-1862) married Anne GRAY (c1790-1867) on the 18 June 1826 at the Chapel of Garioch, Aberdeenshire.

They had three (known) children:

James WEBSTER baptised 5 May 1827 at Daviot, ABD. See below.
Margaret WEBSTER baptised 5 March 1829 at Daviot, ABD. Nothing more is known.
Henrietta WEBSTER baptised 3 August 1831 at Daviot, ABD. Married George WHITE 1862 Daviot. Died 1916 Daviot.

On the 15 June 1851, James (Jnr) married Barbara NEIL at either Midmar or Daviot, or both? Barbara NEIL was the daughter of Alexander NEIL and Christina ROBBIE. Barbara and James came to Mains of Inveramsay on the 28 May 1852, signing a lease with Patrick James IRVING, member of the Society of Writers (ie a lawyer) of Inveramsay. James came to Mains on Inveramsay from the Mains of Shiel, but his father was thought to be farming at Mounie, near Daviot. By the 1861 census James, 33 was a farmer of 111 acres employing three men (a ploughman and two labourers) and one dairymaid.

James and Barbara�s children were all born at Mains of Inveramsay. James died at the age of 40 of peritonitis, three months before his youngest child was born.

By the 1871 census, Barbara, a 39-year-old widow, now had 155 acres and employed thirteen men, two boys and a general domestic servant for the house.

The present farmhouse was built in 1874 and steadings (ie farm buildings for housing the horses, cows, calves and other cattle, and barn for holding the straw and threshing mill) in 1876. Mains of Inveramsay is today (2004) still farmed by a descendant of James WEBSTER.

James and Barbara had seven children, five daughters and two sons;

Ann WEBSTER married John MIDDLETON. They had three sons and two daughters. After being widowed Ann moved to Hawaii in 1920. She has no living descendants.

Jane/Jeannie WEBSTER married James THOM and they had one son and one daughter. After being widowed Jane moved to London and ran a boarding house. She has no living descendants.

James WEBSTER moved to Hawaii in 1893 and later married Mary PATTERSON from a nearby farm in Aberdeenshire. They had two daughters and two sons. Descendants in Hawaii and mainland USA.

Barbara WEBSTER died aged 20 years unmarried.

Henrietta Isabella WEBSTER married Charles SPENCE. They had one son who died young. She has no living descendants.

George WEBSTER married Margaret FRASER and farmed Mains of Inveramsay. They had four daughters and two sons. Descendants in Scotland, Australia and New Zealand.

Christina Robbie WEBSTER married John Rennie ALEXANDER and after farming in the area emigrated to New Zealand in 1912. They had five sons and one daughter. Descendants in New Zealand and Australia.
