NEW ZEALAND AND WORLD WAR ONE
AKA
ALSO KNOWN AS
I have found almost 3000 name changes for soldiers and nurses who served with the New Zealander Forces during World War One - see below to search the names.
Besides transcription errors and married surnames (for the nurses)I have found examples of:
1/ Anglicising Maori and Germanic sounding names, and the dropping of
O', Mac/Mc/M', Van/Von, Le/La
2/ Deliberate change - name served under bears no relation to real name.
3/ Christian names appear in various orders, and part can be in the shortened name version.
4/ The surname is the same but the Christian names differ.
5/ The Christian names are the same the surname differs.
6/ The surname has been double-barrelled, has been dropped altogether and a Christian name becomes the surname, or the order of the names change so that a Christian name becomes a surname.
7/ The addition or deletion of apostrophes (French surnames), gaps (ie the Maori TE, dashes.
8/ The same name but using different spellings ie Sidney/Sydney, Wilfred/Wilfrid, Alan/Allen/Alen/Alan/Alon, Frederick/Fredrick/Fredric. This also works for surname spellings.
9/ Confusion with Christian name/Surname order (Maori names)
10/ Gramatical errors - i before e or e before i, Ley or Ly.
11/ Use of a nickname or shortened version of the Christian name — Harry/Henry, John/Jack.
12/ The use of H or K (Murdock, Murdoch)
13/ The addition of the Kiwi "S" to names that do not end in S ie Clement/Clements
14/ Phonetic spelling of name that has been later changed to correct spelling.
